Ok, I wanted to share my success story as maybe a minor inspiration to some getting into SEO. I'm not rich or a millionaire, but I have been able to slowly sculpt a career out of SEO, all while being a college drop out. I owe a ton of it to the awesome advice given on black hat world.
1-2 Years ago
I created my first website about 2 years ago, it was an Arcade website and was my first success. At the peak it was pulling me in around $500 dollars a month using adsense and epic game ads. I threw some book marks at it, and it ranked, back when that shit was all you needed. I was pretty excited, but still had dreams of making 5k a month or more. Over time, as I worked my regular job, my site tanked and I really didn't have time to do it anymore. I eventually quit my regular job because....well.... I hated it.
Other opportunities
I started getting into other ways to make cash. I got approved to be a Google reviewer using one of the larger review contractors. So I spent about 4-6 months doing that to get by. I still have that contract now, but it built experience and relevance in my industry. Not necessary ranking sites, but understanding how Google views relevancy and quality.
This Year
This year I spent all my time looking for SEO jobs, to gain MORE experience, and I got my first job working full time doing SEO for a small web design company. I get paid approximately 15 dollars an hour, and where I live, that isn't too bad, not great either. But it was extremely important for me as I learned a LOT about client interaction and got to practice white hat SEO on lots of client sites. I developed the entire SEO business model for this company based on experimenting.
Recently
Recently I have been a bit frustrated at my current SEO job, due to the way it's managed, aka no ability to outsource and I basically work as a link monkey and can only provide average results at best because of that. Most people who do SEO understand the importance of being able to outsource work. A week ago as I was feeling frustrated about my job, I got a call from one of our clients. She asked for some basic information on her FTP so a intern at her company can work on the site. After a few mins of conversation, she finally turned to the topic of me working for her. She suggested when the summer intern is gone, I come work for her for $20+ a hour plus benefits. I was pretty shocked, but a bit elated that I must be doing something right.
Now
I still work at my small SEO company and am planning on following up with the other clients job offer in a month or so towards the end of summer. I read some of the awesome threads in offline marketing by 7878 and Tacktical. I filed my LLC a week ago to start my own SEO firm on the side, until I can have my own firm full time. I realized that I want to outsource and provide great results for clients, make more money, and ultimately have more freedom. I hope in the next month or so I will really start marketing my SEO business and start picking up my first clients.
*If you can, get paid to learn. I get paid to experiment with dozens of websites, massive PPC campaigns and more. It sure beats investing your own money on these things when you are in learning mode.

Much that I have learned has come from this forum, and is slowly sculpting a career for me, being a bum college drop out and all. I have had a few successes and many failures. But as long as you keep going in the right direction and learning, the possibilities are endless. Remember, failure doesn't mean shit unless your dead.
