If you don't mind subtitles, these are all very good movies:

    La Haine - French
    Mesrine - French gangster
    A Prophet - French gangster
City of God - Brazilian movie set in the favelas
The Ring - both the Korean and Japanese versions are better then the US remake
Old Boy - Korean horror - I'd highly recommend this one.

In fact, the Koreans make brilliant horror movies so I'd recommend giving them a try if you've never seen any

I'll second Haspel's choices of Leon and Life of Brian too - Life of Brian gets my vote for the best comedy ever made

    Check these out:

Ong Bak (trilogy) - Thai action films that will blow you away with the stunts
Headhunters - Norwegian I think, first 15 minutes are slow but after that its non stop awesomeness
Amelie - French, not for everyone but worth a shot
The Intouchables - French, smart and funny movie
Battle Royale (duology) - Japanese gore, Think the Hunger Games but way better, also the movies came out before the Hunger Games books were written so I'd like to think they influenced them...
The Machine Girl - More Japanese gore, I imagine the trailer will sum it up
