Hello everyone, Today I want to share a real experience that I encountered when setting up an advertising account on Facebook. Although it was just a small error, it caused quite a lot of disruption when setting up a campaign. I hope that through this article, anyone who encounters a similar situation will have more perspective to handle it faster.
The problem I am having is that when I add a new payment card to my Facebook ad account (which was previously active), the system keeps giving me the error: “There was an error adding your payment method”.
I tried:
- Re-entering the card information several times.
- Using a private network (not using an unknown proxy).
- Checking with the bank, the card still works fine with other services.
Then, I sent a support request to Facebook for further testing. The response from Facebook support was quite quick and suggested the following:
1. Recheck the limit and card status.
2. Try adding another payment method.
3. Wait 24-48 hours and try again.
However, when I followed the instructions, the result was the same. And even the card I used before was reported by Facebook as invalid and could not be added to this account anymore.
The solution I tried and it worked. Instead of continuing to try on the old account, I:
1. Created a new Facebook profile (new personal profile).
2. Created a completely new Business Manager.
3. Set up a new advertising account in that BM.
4. Reused the old bank card that was rejected – and the card was added successfully immediately.
No errors, no rejection notice like before.
Analyzing the possible causes From this experience, I draw a few assumptions:
- The old Facebook account may have been flagged
– not completely disabled, but limited in some functions such as adding payment methods.
- Using the same IP address repeatedly between different devices can also make the behavioral assessment system unreliable. Or it could simply be that the old account has an unclear history (for example, it was blocked for ads, rejected many times) and is "on the internal watch list".
Conclusion and advice If you encounter the case of Unable to add payment method even though the information is correct, Facebook rejects the card that used to work well and Support does not give a clear solution, you can try this way:
1. Use a clean Facebook profile (should be an account that has never run ads or has suspicious behavior).
2. Create a completely new BM, do not reuse old resources.
3. Reuse the payment method in the new environment. And of course, make sure you use a stable IP, avoid VPN or proxy that has been used by many people before
Hopefully this little share will be useful for those who are having problems adding payment methods – a fairly common error but sometimes difficult to find the specific cause. Wish everyone a smooth account setup and effective campaigns!

This is a common issue. Using a clean profile and fresh BM often helps when the old account is silently limited. Stable IP and consistent behavior are key to avoiding future payment method errors.
