I've had #1 rankings for a while for some of these sites and many page 1 rankings. Today I noticed the #1 ranked sites moved all the way to #5 and others from page 1 moved to pages 3-5. I have not done anything to these sites for some time. Is it a change in the algo that affected my sites cuz I can't believe it's the competition since many of these are store sites that are not even optimized for the keywords, but have moved ahead of me.

Any suggestions? Should I start building links again to these sites to move them up or what?

I would go with this. Start building some links again and see if you start to notice any improvements.

Keep building backlinks man. Even if you say the competition seems weak...don't forget that none of the sites that are on G #1 page sit and do nothing. Otherwise they won't be there. Just keep up building links and you will come back.

Where are you located? I am in New Zealand and in our local search engine, the Panda update just hit. As in, a couple of weeks ago. This could be why your rankings dived. If you are in the USA then I know the panda update hit a month or two ago so it would not be that :)

Why don't you just add a few articles? Spend like a hour or two writing some new content. Then do some backlinking again. Also since you are saying it is a easy niche, a lot of other people could have found it and said the same thing, thus trying to beat you and getting better backlinks and seo practices. And with the amount of people who are searching for niches nowadays its only a matter of time...
I say just do some content updating and backlinking so google see's you are active and available.

I am in USA so I don't think it was the Panda update because the sites took no hit then. It is funny that these sites are almost 3 years old and were very stable as far as rankings were concerned. For one of these sites I had built like 100 or so high PR (3-6) comment links including .edu and .gov sites, but the site never really improved rankings from its #3 spot. Today that site dropped to #10 and I had added 5 more posts to this site last month. It is weird that a group of sites got hit and just not a single site. Wonder if there is something in common among the sites that lowered their rankings.

Guess I have to start a link building campaign for these sites. Is simple link pyramids like have web 2.0's link to money site and then backlinking these web2.0 sites with article marketing using AMR? It seems that blog comment and profile links are not helping since I used a profile pyramid link building service and those sites are a few that dropped in ranking as well.

I agree, I had my site go from position #80 to #550, but after adding fresh content it went to position #39. It is certainly worth a try.
