Hey, i just purchased a VPS at burst.net but i'm not a Linux pro so maybe you can help me out a little:

I don't want to host any sites at the moment, just run my php bots with mysql.

So
OS: Ubuntu, CentOs, Debian, Fedora?
Web Server: Apache, LightHttp, other?

What else do i need?
Besides php, mysql and phpmyadmin

I would use CentOS, and you need to install and configure Apache.....

This really should be burst.net's responsibility

I know that when client's order VPS's or dedicated servers with me I always help them through the entire setup process

The initial setup should be the hosts responsibility regardless manged or un-managed. What kind of host is going to set you up with a server that isnt working for you. I mean once the inital setup is done if you break something obviously that is why you buy managed support.

But seriously who wants to buy a VPS or Server and not even be able to use it, thats not very good customer support in my opinion

It is absolutely not the hosts responsibility to set everything up for you if you have an unmanaged server.

One of the reasons people buy an unmanaged server is so that they can set it up and configure it the way THEY want it.

If a client asks me to help them with their VPS / Server setup after paying me good money for that I will absolutely help them. IDK How whatever place you host handles things, but The web hosting industry is not very customer friendly and I'm trying to change that!

Ok i'll try CentOs + Apache, thanks.

And yes i knew it was unmanaged, cheaper and i get to learn something too :D

But maybe you'r right with the customer support.
They gave me vePortal Control Panel which has an option for a 1-click webmin installation. And it didn't work... so i wrote the support and they referred me to the webmin homepage.

Honestly, if the server is unmanaged, get WHM/cPanel. Unless of course you already know Linux or you want to learn how to be your own sysadmin--which is a great skill--but I imagine you probably just want to host your web sites/make money.

Use webmin for controlling your linux with gui.
Use kloxo for manage your web hosting, it will auto install everything you need as web hosting like apache/lighttpd, mysql, mail, etc.

I've tried some cpanel alternaive, and I think both of them, webmin and kloxo is the best, but for kloxo you need to use centos 32 bit, you can use centos 64 bit but it will need a little tweaking.
