Apologies for my dumb question but I'm not quite sure where to start and want someone to point me in the right direction. How do I set my server up which is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard so that I can connect to it using remote desktop?

I am trying to set up a dedicated server to run my SEO programs from and I will be the only user logging into it. My Googling so far has lead me to remote desktop services and setting up a role in there but that would only give me 120 days before I would have to buy a license. However when I Google whether I need terminal services, it says I don't because it is only me logging into it and not multiple users and you only need terminal services if there are multiple users. So then how do I do it?

    Any help would be appreciated

Ha, i wish it was that simple. I think i need to use terminal server but only in admin mode which I believe comes free with Windows 2008 R2. I just have to work out how to do it!

Click Start, right click My Computer, click Properties, click remote tab, check box Enable Remote Desktop on this computer., click Ok.

Make sure you add the exception in the firewall also. Good luck

    Hi,

Do you have access to this server?

server manager - configure remote desktop and enable it

Looks like an issue with your system. Try this:
    Code:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rdenable.htm
If you mean on the server, then try this:
    Code:
    http://www.networksteve.com/forum/topic.php/can_not_see_the_option_%22allow_the_remote_control%22_in_the_2008_R2/?TopicId=20656&Posts=1

    Then setup the VPS:

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

Thanks. I think it is something like this that is causing the problem. There isn't a terminal services option under windows components though to disable.

I think terminal services was running as when i went to install MS Office it was asking for a volume license. I disabled all of the roles in Server Manager which did the trick but now I can't connect the server to the internet at all. It now isn't picking up the network at all. Everything is connected ok and the internet is working on the other machines. I am tearing my hair out with this damn machine!
