Anyone else having the same problem or got any ideas on how to fix it?

I've tried reinstalling the latest version of wordpress and uninstalling all my plugins.

Is the image still in the same place? Shouldn't just disappear.

I don't think I worded the original post very well. I can still insert images. I just can't "set featured image" which is basically the thumbnail on wordpress. The option to do that has disappeared.

Open the "Screen Options" tab at the top right corner and see if you or something unchecked the 'featured image' field. Check it and the box should appear. Also, if you have changed or updated any themes/plugins, there may be some conflict.

Checked the screen options and it's not there either. It's not a plugin but I'll try changing themes.

If the featured image option is missing from the 'screen options', then your theme doesn't support featured images. Check this page from the WordPress Codex and you can add featured image support on your own.
