I had an interesting observation the other day which I thought I would share and also to see whether anyone here has any thoughts....

I have around 46 micro niche websites spread across two distinct hosting companies...I keep a track of my adsense earnings (religiously!) and noticed the other night that my best performing ($'s) sites are located under one of the two servers.

Now, the interesting thing is the second hosting is the usual Hostgator baby which is the one containing sites which are doing no where near as good as the other hosting. The weird thing is the hosting which is doing much better is a relatively unknown company which specialises in hosting porn material. I chose it when I started out because it was cheap and chearful....

Has anyone seen anything similar when it comes to the servers and companies your sites are located and what impact (if any) you have noticed or indeed whether my case is simply an anomaly?

I'll note that when I move my sites between different hosting providers, it rarely seems to have any impact on SERPs.

I think what you see may be an anomaly.

It might come down to the speed/performance of your sites with hosts that offer not just solid servers, but also solid bandwidth.

So many people just do not understand the real differences between host providers. I happen to be very close with the provider I use, and it amazes me some of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes that they do to oversell their stuff.

In the case you are describing, without getting into where those providers might be located, sounds like you might be noticing the difference between a premium bandwidth provider vs a crappy one. Bandwidth is one of the larger expenses a host provider has to contend with, and because most people have absolutely no idea about the different between premium bandwidth and crappy bandwidth, a host provider would rather pay 10X less (yes its that much of a difference) for crappy bandwidth and then attach a nice big fat number to the package you buy.

While the premium bandwdith provider, is going to give you access speeds that are top notch, low latency, and not overrun by other stuff and oversold.

It sounds like the adult hosting provider has to really deliver on bw for their niche, so they might be running better pipes than HostGator.

I know this is an old thread.. but thought I might bring it back with this. :)

@Mister Gemini - thanks for your views on this. I must admit your theory sounds entirely logical in terms of bandwidth, page load times etc and this in fact is quite possibly the reason for the improved serps position using this hosting. I like this explaination much more than an 'anomaly'.....

would you mind sharing the other host? I am getting pissed of with hostgator, they block my data base every now and then.

I've spent the last decade in adult, with some wh mainstream stuff as well. My experience is that MisterGemini is completely on target. Top-level adult webhosts don't usually sell Cogent or other cheap bandwidth; they sell premium bandwidth with lots of redudancies. Compared to most mainstream hosts, the speed on top-level adult hosts simply screams.
Of course, that means a premium price, compared to most mainstream hosting companies --- and the top of the line adult hosts, like NationalNet and MojoHost, only sell dedicated servers, they don't even deal with virtual accounts. (They also won't tolerate lots of BH tactics - which is why I've unsuccessfully been looking for recommendations on BHW without much success, but that's another story lol.)
Bottom line: adult hosts (who are also happy to host WH or GH mainstream sites) are more expensive, but the performance is worth it, if you need it.

    agree 100%

noticed a 30-50% bump in traffic on my more popular projects when I put caching onto all sites on a swamped server running a bunch of autoblogs
