This has happened twice for 2 different websites. They were both ranking higher for main keywords, then dropped, and now it's back but on page 10+ and the serp shows a random page from the websites instead of the home page like it used to. The first site has been like this for around 2 weeks, and this just happened to the second site within the past 2 days.

Is this some sort of google hiccup? Or is there some way to fix this up?

Nope. It was before, but it just randomly changed and went down in rank. Why would the disclaimer page show up in the serp? This is pretty confusing. Im hoping someone here can tell me whats going on and how i can fix it.

I believe you got a slap. Building links too fast, google devalueved the links to the main page, and inner pages got higher ranks because they have a good interlinking structure.

There is a great chance that your sites might be over-optimized, Google has been buckling down hard in the past weeks, a lot of people's homepages have been disappearing from the SERPS. What is your keyword density on your homepage?

I believe you are seeing the effects of the "penguin". Happened to one of my sites after the first penguin was unleashed.

I think you site is Penalized by Penguine. Remove some bad links then there is the chance to rankup your site again. I my site is also penalized after penguine but now my site is on in Top 5 again on my main keyword Remove your bad backlinks it's will be help you to increase you SERP easily.

Delete the page from google webmaster tools and resubmit your sitemap. That should work.

Because you built lot of links for main page, you have to build some backlinks for inner pages with some random anchors

I'm gonna give this a Try, I don't have any Penalized sites with GWT, But the ones that are penalized I'll try and Resubmit the sitemap and see if that does anything. :)

I've noticed this in my sites too. I think it's a penalty as other posters have stated.

Too high. between 2% and 3% max these days.

Make sure any keywords aren't also included in other words or phrases on that URL..example say you were optimizing for "football"

Check "footballer" - "profootball" and stuff like that.

Top hint. If Google keyword tool shows an associated keyword with exactly the same profile, it might be a "super synonym" in which case Google sometimes seems to count it as EXACTLY the same word, and suddenly you are spamming it at 7% without realising it.

Also last thing, if it's a phrase, remember to count all the words.
The phrase "cheap microwave ovens" is three words. You put it once in 100 words - that's 3%. Put it once in 300 words - that's 1%

Couple of my homepages are over optimized. Better to go that way first - then reduce the count a little later with good normal synonyms or associated.relavent keywords.

I dont suggest removing backlinks, it could do more harm than before. (I tried and i am nowhere now). Further, its pretty hard to remove the backlinks, say if you used any xrumer blast or blog comments blast, its not an easy task to remove those backlinks. Check whether your backlinks on any private blog networks. If it is then request them to remove it. But don't remove everything at once. Just try removing few links and see.

My contact page was ranking for one of the keyword which i targeted instead home page. I removed all keywords from my homepage and rewritten the sales page without kws. Now its showing up again. But at the same time for other kws, home page is showing up. so try again with all your related kws for home page.

It should be some sort of penalty, but its not an end.

I've got a local site with my KMZ file ranking on the second page instead of homepage :(

Another site has the contact page ranking on the fifth page with homepage nowhere to be found.

I ran into this problem before on a few sites back in the early panda days. It seemed to sort itself out after a couple of months. I continued building backlinks to it. Although now it's hard to know if this is an algorithm problem or a penalty. I would think it's more along the lines of some kind of penalty to the homepage.

Pretty sure it's over optimized onsite SEO.
Adding more content to the main URL and diluting the keyword frequency. Also make sure other keywords are too high.
Quite often Google reacts really quickly once you sort it out (2-3 days)

I'm only talking quite big sites here (100,000 words plus) not sure what happens on mini and micro sites.

I've got about 100 Micro sites that this is happening too. I'll try adding more content on the home pages and see what happens.

I've had this happen a couple times before. Here are some of my tips
    - Continue building quality back links to the homepage. If you've blasted it with Scrapebox, you'll probably require a bit of time to recover
    - Add more content to the site
    - In the meantime, have a big link to take people to the homepage on the disclaimer page
