Im researching keywords and how tough the competition for those keywords are, and sometimes it seems just wayyy too easy.. Say its a best "product" searchterm and the serp shows 10 aff sites, keyword tools says its ~20 competition.. It obviously seems a bit off.

I know you can hide pbns and backlinks with robots txt, is this what they have done? Since some sites have 1 PA and sometimes even 1 DA in top10, their backlinks must be hidden in robots.txt right?

And if so, how could i analyse how strong their domains really are?

Ok so which tool would u recommend to detect the fairy dust? :p

Well yes but white hat seos have been saying that for years hehe.. I just wanna be sure of the strenght of my competitors domains before i proceed.. DA1/PA1 seems unreasonable for firstpage for a ~30 comp keyword..

not sure where that comp number comes from...is that google adwords? if so it does not apply to seo ranking, it applies to adwords advertisers.

yes, while we have tools we can only combine bits of info to make a conclusion....many things are always missing including hidden links.

most things worthwhile will take 10 or more pbn links to rank..... so if it worthwhile then go after it.

DA/PA I personally dont bother with it. I use majestic but again same thing with missing info.

When against affiliate sites it is a different analysis....is it a launch jack term where all sites are new or are they affiliate blogs that have an inner page ranking for every new product? How many searches appear to exist? is it ecigs, forex or the wso of the week...all these factors are there to steer a blind man as best as possible :)

Yeah i use KWFinder too, for now. Im just trying to find a way to know for sure which sites i could most likely outrank.. If a site has a huge hidden pbn that i cant see it will be a problem..

Its for an affiliate site.. I try to manually review the serp aswell, its just that DA and PA seems to matter a lot and its pretty scary to dive into a niche not knowing the competitors real backlink metrics..

It is like saying you will not run a race without knowing everything about the others in the race. Just do your best and use your skills; it is about you, not them. If you do not have the experience and skills to effectively run the race with good odds then try or pick opponents that are on your level.

I disagree, in order to improve your SERP you need to know what others are doing that are working for them and try to replicate it and make a better versions. I think this applies to sports competition, when you´re facing a basketball game, there are people on every team that devote their time for the sole purpose to scout the opposite team and evaluate their weakness and strong point so you can come up with a effective strategy to counter-attack their strong point and explot their weakness.
