my beloved dell mini the one i use everywhere i go - the solid state drive just died!

for the most part i have my my docs saved on a separate SD card but the worst part is my firefox favorites.... all gone... :(

i use my dell mini anytime i have any downtime, in front of the tv, at the park, starbucks, travelling, even in the bathroom!

i mainly use this particular one for research - i bookmark anything i find interesting... i have like 6 months of research and bookmarks all gone... as it saves these to the hard drive and not the SD disk...

might not sound like a big deal but i probably had 400+ hot resources on there for niches, future developments, possibly jvs, projects, tools, etc, etc potentially a lot of money making concepts and ideas :(

am pissed cos its died, am pissed cos i didnt back it up properly

not bothered about the fact i have to buy another drive - that's irrelevant infact im thinking about getting a higher specced version the fact that the data lost was priceless and took such a long time to collect THATS WHAT IM PISSED ABOUT!

so i guess lesson learned guys - make sure you back everything up including your bookmarks/favorites... :(

in the meantime ill carry on being pissed at myself... more so now that i just realized ive also lost everything that i had saved in my desktop folder too.... FFS! *sigh*

Have you tried restoring the data?
There are several pieces of software that allow you to do that. It happened to me once.

Plus, there are companies that restore the data too.
And are you sure, if it's in the warranty, dell won't restore the data?

I've gone through a similar night mare on more than one occasion which is why I own more external HD's than anyone I know.

Solid state is supposed to be more reliable long term than the old mechanical systems, that's the whole allure of moving towards it. What gives? I hope this is just an isolated Dell issue, not one affecting all minis.

maybe i'm the only person here who uses them but i like to use mozy. it's $5 a month for unlimited backup and every file on my computer gets backed up and updated onto their servers when I'm sleeping.

I don't think is that easy to recover data from a solid state HD. I could be wrong though. I lost a lot of info too a year ago. My screen froze and my HD would make grinding noises :S. I knew what it was and at that very moment it downed on me that I had no proper backups of my data. I took it for data recovery but when they opened it was all dust and shards. Now I backup my firefox bookmarks.html file regularly, as well as all other files I don't want to lose.

I'm so sorry about your work gone down the drain, it's a sinking feeling I don't want to experience anytime soon.

i dont know whats happened but the bios is saying the drive has 0GB ???

I have no way of connecting the Solid state drive to anything to see if i can pull data from it - i put it in my other netbooks and they dont recognize it??

i get an error message like check media cable - but there is no cable it connects into a slot, have taken it out, put it back in 20 times, ive cursed at it, shaken it, cursed at it some more and it still doesnt work...

i was think ill get warranty on it - but the warranty sticker is there but the print has rubbed off - so i dont know just pissed right now... am just glad that the last minute goal against united was disallowed... otherwise the damn thing would be in the garden and id be fixing the window right now!

Yeah things like these really pisses one off. Maybe if the value of the information is high enough you can hire a professional company to retrieve the information, I am sure that the right person knows how to.

I just had my windows crash and become unaccessible. I managed to save my files by taking the hd out and putting it in an enclosure that turned it into an external hd, plugged it into my laptop and copied all the files I wanted. You should try this you may be able to recover the bookmarks.

Really sorry to hear this Ukescuba. One thing you might want to look into is a plugin for Firefox called Xmarks (used to be called foxmarks). It's free, and syncs your bookmarks to a account on there site. Then, you will never lose you bookmarks, as they are backed up automatically. Go to Firefox's page and check it out.

You have inspired me though, I'm backing up all my BH stuff now to DVD. This stuff is too valuable to lose!

If someone would just make a site that you could bookmark your favorite sites, that way all that info is stored on the web, They would be rich :D

I had that happen, I used a file scavenger to get the stuff off the hard drive, there are companies that guarentee file recovery, but last time I looked it was like $300.

I have an external now, need another, but if something happened to my external all that stuff would be lost also. [did not learn the first time]

I'm not saying that I'm any better.. In fact I've lost quite a bit of valuable stuff in hard drives crashes of the past.

There are however so many great services to use. Google Docs, online storage drives, Bookmark Syncing plugins for firefox.

A little forethought can go a long way.

Hopefully you'll be able to pull some data of it.. Good luck.

looks like im outta look on this one - these solid state drives arent like regular hard drives... they have no moving parts... the ones in the dell are Mini-PCIe Solid State Drives and as yet there does not appear to be any connectors to hook it up to another port/drive on a different machine

there supposed to be more stable and secure... its my own fault but im not sure how it happened, i was looking to upgrade my memory on my other dell mini - i had upgraded this one before to 2gb, all i did was take the cover off and write down the serial codes off the memory, went to turn it back on and... gone drive not recognized! :(

now if i had been screwing around with it - touching it with my fingers, spilling water/spaghetti etc on the inside of it i would be like yeah i know why it died, but i didnt do anything, i am very familiar with the insides of a pc so am ultra careful about stuff like that...

    grrrrrr

Get xMarks, easier way to prevent this kind of thing happening to your firefox data.
