He's an idiot. Links "earned" and link "building" doesn't matter. Google isn't going to be able to tell the difference, so they will either count both or penalized both.

Build links that simulate earned links. Got it.

Nothing new here. Quality backlinks still, and always will, matter a great deal.

Google bot cannot know intent of links built by others, so this is kind of stupid.

This was quite literally one of the worst posts on SEOMOZ ever, he actively attacks methods that just clearly still work. Directories were penalized, but many many directories still add a lot of value and are very helpful for building the root authority he reps so much. Not to mention every single niche still has many amazingly effective paid links, paid links are a legit form of advertising, this post at best is a sanctimonious ignorant piece of garbage.

Is he joking? So google don't want us to purposefully create links to manipulate our rank?
    Wow that's new.

I mean, seriously. If Google didn't want people to promote things, then:

    • Why did they release the rel="me", rel="author"?
    • Why did they release the abusive rel="standout"?

This is why SEOMoz can be absolute garbage sometimes; sanctimonious holier than thou mentality.

They offer all this software and services, yet when their own website ranks for snuggie dog bed, they claim 'witchcraft' , 'black hat tactics' et all.

Either they were too stupid/incompetent to figure out how these backlinks were initially formed in which case they are frauds for selling the technology they offer.

Or they knew exactly how these backlinks were formed on their site for a non-competitive keyword and are so fucking afraid of the big G that they play suck up at all times, which is an even worse case of fraudulence.

At least I'm not the only one here that thought this was TOTAL dribble. Give me a "F"ing break that backlinks don't work, my A$$ they don't work. By his way of thinking, we should just put up a website, write a crap load of content and HOPE that maybe someday someone will share my post on some social platform? Ya that's the answer.....

I did get a good laugh when he mentioned Blog Circus....

I just saw a report on CNBC about Google and one thing got my attention: number of organic queries decreased!
    Oh great!

I've read the comments from seomoz: One user prefers DuckDuckGo :)))

Really? Now DuckDuckGo competes with google!?
    What a mess!!! ;)

This is BS. How on earth can google bot makes a difference between a link build and a link earned? And let's suppose it is like that. Then how about pure 100% whitehat? Is it dead too? No way.

How can a new site be promoted if not by creating a bunch of quality links on it? You can't earn any link with a new website because no one knows about it. To make it popular you have to create a FB page, a Twitter account, Pinterest...anything which means link building. Totally speculative crap if you ask me.

haha, that's pretty much it; I don't think much has changed, you have to be more careful now with your link building. I started with a new site (a month old) and three super competitive KWs, went from nowhere to be found (not in the top 300) to 40, 92, and 142 position respectively. Might not go up more than that soon as the site is new, but all this was done with link building alone and nothing else.

As for the "do what we say" and you will be rewarded - yeah, right
