I have been following a VERY succesfull seo firm that does work for mostly Australian companies. They are getting #1 rankings for about 95% of their clients.

Their link patterns for all the sites remain the same:
    • Low PR(PR1-PR3) homepage links(the links are infact sitwide, but with a PR2-PR3 sites, its very unlikely the site has any more pages with a PR that high).
    • These sites are either related autoblogs, or unrelated small(1-20 page) sites)

Despite some of their highest backlinks coming for PR4 sites, they are consistently beating my sites that have dozens of PR5-PR6 backlinks.

This is all theory, for all I know they could have a load of 301 redirects, but its unlikely.Thought I would share this little peice of information, and see if anyone has had any luck with this method.

Do you have numbers? We could be talking about in power in numbers here. Making they are making 10 times the backlinks you do

Are the low PR backlinks contextual?

I suggest you take a quick look here, especially #4 and #5:

Also take a look at the backlinks of the pages linking to your competition's website. Google offers more power to your competitor due to the fact that he has contextual links, as oxonbeef also mentions.

Authentic links, or "Authentic Looking" links will always far outstrip "backlinks" I know alot of people who have a lot of success placing well anchored keyword links on pages with lots of "wheel related" (unlinked) keywords.

Not to mention, nailing down good onsite seo is 90% of the work in a non "cutthroat" niche.

You would be SHOCKED at how many big players can be beaten for BIG keywords with effort only focused into onsite SEO.

And can you be sure it's low PR links? I mean it's been more than half a year since last PR update, a lot of those sites could have changed Pagerank since then.

This is important, keep in mind that Google constantly updates PR, but only ever publishes it occasionally.

Use something like SEOMOZ trustrank or even sheer inlinks on YSE.
