I'm about as green as it gets when it comes to affiliate marketing, but I'm quickly putting the pieces together and had a question for all the seasoned pros out there. I've found a pretty interesting market with a number of sub niches that I could absolutely compete and rank for within the next 6-months using black hat techniques (if I don't screw the pooch). That said, I noticed that the sub-niches are all very closely related and after reading the siloing thread by BassTrackerBoats (tired to link...but being a new pup in the black hat world I need to earn those privileges) it got me thinking about some hypotheticals.

To make things clearer, lets go with this example. Lets say the micro niche is "Best Dark Chocolate Bars," but I've noticed that there are a ton of different sub niches related to larger niche of "best chocolate bars." Lets say those are:

    • Best Dark Chocolate Bars (2k LMS)
    • Best White Chocolate Bars (1k LMS)
    • Best Organic Chocolate Bars (500 LMS)
    • Best Milk Chocolate Bars (4k LMS)

If I target one of those sub niches and build a site with siloing it would look something like this (I think - please point out any errors :)).

Lets say the power pages the above diagram each have traffic of 500 LMS. On the other hand if I build a "Best Chocolate Bars" site it might look something like this.

    So here are my questions:

    • Which site would be best to build? The "Best Dark Chocolate Bars" site would be more targeted and potentially easier to rank for, but would also have less overall volume and potential profitability? On the other hand, you'd need more content/time to rank for the larger more competitive "Power Page" KW's of "Best Chocolate Bars", but if you achieved rankings on them you'd probably make a more substantial profit.

    • If you built the "Best Dark Chocolate Bars" Niche site and it successfully validated the chocolate bar market, but you had no more KW's/Content for DCB's, could you transition that site into a "Best Chocolate Bars" Niche site?
      • If so, how would that work with siloing? If you had to create a new root page, would you loose all of your rankings?

    • To make things even more interesting, lets say that the Root KW of "Best Chocolate Bars" actually had less overall traffic than "Best Dark Chocolate Bars" (assuming competition is equal). However the supporting Power Page/Category KW's for "Best Chocolate Bars" have more traffic than "Best Dark Chocolate Bars."
      • Would that impact your decision?
      • Would those supporting KW's be harder to rank for with a silo since the Root KW is weaker?

I hope all that made sense. I'm having way to much fun working out all the angles, but this was one I just don't have enough experience to have any idea about. I thought it might be an interesting scenario for you guys to take a stab at.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can toss my way. Hoping you won't give the noob too hard of a time now ;)

I hope this helps in some way. There are so many people on this site with far greater experience and I have, and I hope they visit your thread and give you better insights than I can. Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to offer your perspective. Over-complicating things is a strong point of mine ;)

This advice really clears things up. I was leaning towards the second option, but when looking at other niche sites in the "Best Dark Chocolate Bar" Subniche I noticed that almost all of them were exclusively focused on one topic and I started to second guess myself. The second option really makes the most sense I think overall will have much stronger categories for the silo.

You are the man. Thank you again!
