    Hey gang,

So yesterday I had a job interview (felt like I was interviewing them, breaking down their business model and health of their business etc) that went for about 5 hours, however halfway through the interview the talk naturally went to SEO.

They are drifting away from their current supplier and partner for SEO, and I asked if I could look at their reports. I was stunned to see that they were ranking for 20 keywords as claimed by their SEO company, so I had to check adwords tool during the meeting.

Turns out, these keywords sucked and some had literally 0 exact searches a month. I though this SEO company has been absolute shysters, gaming their client base of 20-30 people and making them happy with just ranking them with non-competitive terms and presenting this list to happy, oblivious clients.

However, upon further investigation it was clear that they literally had no idea what they were doing, and they were implementing the same strategy on the other arms of their business. The beauty of this is that they never provide clients lists of traffic from these search terms, just traffic stats and SERP rankings.

It was clear that the interviewer was not happy with them when I told them about this, even pointing out that they have the American spelling of a word so of course they wouldn't be ranking with it locally.

So if you any of you were thinking of starting your own business, the snake oil industry is booming because these guys are making a killing in recurring monthly SEO fees even though they cause literally 0 sales and claim results whenever something positive naturally occurs.

Actually, I believe the slur "shyster" is generally reserved for Jewish attorneys...

well results take time so yes this can happen but this is really not news. Why build a bushiness that will last only 3 months when you can build one on a real seo foundation that can last years. Most of your new business will come from your old business so this is a bad business model to follow

It's bad out there. Amazing how many people think this is easy. SEO is not a push button service.

Honestly, my only reference to the word shyster is from the Simpsons episode where Lisa asks Lionel Hutz if he was a shyster. I presumed the term was for someone being totally unethical or unscrupulous etc.

Using Simpsons for your daily dose of "Vocabulary Improvement" is going to help you a lot!

People like this really give the Internet Marketing industry a bad rep. Personally I think it's fine to charge high, but cmon at least provide some value and leads.
