I have a client that just changed his company name and domain address because he was bought by a bigger company. My client was ranking number one for a whole bunch of keywords during the time he had the first domain. My question is will his SEO and SERP ranking get effected if he changed the domain settings on the old domain to refer to the new domain?

If you do a redirect and get a new domain make sure you do a change of address with Google. That should help maintain any ranking.

But always there is a non zero probability to get down in ranking after 301 redirect.

Most likely the site will drop in ranking initially after the 301 redirect.
