I am currently researching SEO and found out about the SEMPO.

    Code:
    www.sempo.org/
I am looking into some of their SEO courses and was wondering if anyone knows these courses or can recommend better ones?

    Code:
    http://www.sempoinstitute.com/
What are the best SEO qualifications to hold. I have just completed a UK BA Hons degree with a first and I am looking for either a suitable masters degree or SEO qualification for next year.

Any advice would be brilliant as bizarrely I have been having trouble finding suitable web masters degrees (this is a blessing in disguise I think as I have a hunch I might be better off with SEO anyways). I would love an SEO qualification but obviously its only worth it if it will get me some £££ or $$$ ;)

    :)

Hmmm, I thought SEMPO fell apart?

Good for them if they are still around.

I just wanted to interject that a strong portfolio of successful websites (or results/rankings) will get you more clients and better income then any course or certification I am aware of.

Just like college, you can have the papers, but if that education is never used or applied, then it is of little good (IMO).

When you can show results, you can get the clients... you show you are the one, and not just by your certifications or lack of. Kinda like on the job experience with results.

    Thanks for the advice.

My situation has changed a few times recently and I was hoping to find out if there are any particularly good quals to help get a job for a few years.

I am under a tremendous amount of pressure to get a 9-5 job ASAP and if I have to I want to go SEO. I have limited experience though but learning is probably my number 1 skill so if there are any qualification routes it would be really handy to know.

As a priority I want to get some white hat sites up to show as examples of work, but will need some work before the results of these will be available.

Its worrying if people thought SEMPO were defunct?

I might learn as much as I can, then select a course, then apply for jobs saying I am imminently starting the course as a foot in the door?

    :)

I believe you are right but I would be happy to take a qualification route if it got me a half decent job short term. I would also feel a lot more confident at job interviews.

Any advice on the best SEO qual would be greatly appreciated.

f** the qualification. Get a job doing SEO and learn it that way. That way you're getting paid to learn it (in effect), and if you really want the qualification, you can do it in your own time.

Look around here and you'll learn alot more than you think, and you'll end up wasting your money in the long run. Sure qualifications are good, but so is practical experience.

Why not create a website, learn a few SEO tricks here, and make a portfolio of things you've SEO'd, and the results. That way you can show your employer too.

I'd give you a job if you came to me like that!

They are just trying to tell you Steve that the piece of paper is not the job, and the employer won't care as long as you show him results...

Increased traffic, increased conversions on existing prospects, new web 2.0 ideas, rankings that get the traffic and closing pages that get the business. JV relationships online, etc.

Build a site even for a make believe dentist, then get it to the first page of a search for good sized town...

Example Searches, Cosmetic Dentists in Anchorage, Family Dentist in Alaska, Anchorage Area Dentist, etc., etc., Just this geo-targeted theme will get you 100 keyword phrases that can be found well (if you know what you are doing at all... otherwise, you are now learning it as well)

Now when you gain those great organic results in Gaggle, Yippie! and Lively, you have not only started your portfolio and have awesome results, you also have something you can sell to any dentist in Anchorage , Alaska who wants to be number One online... this has value to him... even if he has a different website already in Anchorage...

Do 3 in the next 30 days or so (not too hard) and you have a good enough portfolio (with results) to get that job you are thinking a certificate would get for you - This dentist took you on the spot, because he was trying to be the number one dentist in Anchorage for the past four years anyway...

Just an example my friend, but it would probably give you your first 3 clients if you succeed.
