My SEO provider wants to charge me $400.00 to re-set up my ad words account. This is just the set up/optimization fee and does not include any spending on the actual ads. Do you think this is afair price?

It can be, if he is "professional" the $400 can save you $100 each month in long-term. Optimization makes sense when you don't know about AdWords but if you have knowledge $400 can be just waste of money because the "professional" will only add some negative keywords and organize your dashboard so you can feel like you paid for something.

What percentage does $400 represent of your monthly campaign ? Just that can give you an idea of what the service is worth. Thats a fine way to let us know whether your being ripped or not. In my opinion thats a fair way to make an assessment that just having a look at the bill.

You're not giving enough information. I charge based on the size of your campaign. So how many products do you have? Want or plan to use the display network, PLA (Google Shopping), remarketing? All this affects how much time someone spends on creating your campaign.

One thing I'm worried about is that your SEO provider will do this. Typically, SEO people know little or nothing about PPC. While there are some similarities, SEO people are not marketers and PPC is a marketing task. SEO should be too but most don't see it that way. But if your SEO provider has experience in PPC, then have at it.

As mentioned, a great PPC person can save you much more over the long term just in click cost savings. Just yesterday I was talking to a potential client and I pointed out many things he's been doing wrong and basically wasting over $700 per month with his ineffective campaign. My $500 per month fee will provide savings in the first month and make the rest of the campaign that much better thus increasing his revenues.

A good PPC person will not simply add in some negatives. He will also not simply adjust bids all the time to make it appear you are saving. He will make sure you are using the proper keywords and match types, constantly review them as well as test new ads all the time.

Adwords is an extremely complex system, unless you plan on reading a book on its usage it's money well spent to have a solid initial setup. Assuming, of course, the guy isn't a hack.

LucidMarketing is right. $400 for a proper set-up is not much. In fact, that is a great deal if your SEO guy has the experience to craft a really great campaign.
Set up costs can include, the price of SAaS tools used for keyword research and competitive analysis. Which are not only expensive, but can be quite complicated and hard to use and learn.
What is the cost of monthly management? That is where the real value of a PPC expert lies. Set up is extremely important, but a setup should start 'fat' and then will get optimized over the course of months of careful management to become 'lean' and strong.

However, like the others said, I'm wary of an 'SEO provider' wanting to do PPC.

It is a fair price. But that depends on your needs, budget, etc.
Feel free to PM me. I have slightly lower price :D

It CAN be realistic, but it depends on your current spend and number of campaigns he needs to set up or optimize. It IS a lot of work to do the needed research, set up the keywords correctly (matching and negatives), set up PLAs, remarketing tagging, and make sure you use all the applicable Adwords extensions so you take as much real estate as possible in Google's SERPs.

But make sure they are good, like me (kidding) :)

If its worth then go with it. 400 or 4000 is not matter if its worthy.

That's exactly what he's trying to figure out... IF it is worth it.

Some people charge wayyyy more than 400. I would say this is standard in ppc.
