    Hi there.

I'm a photographer in London, and I'm looking to generate some traffic to my website. Since I'm a local business owner, I'd like to rank in particular keywords for my area.

So, I've got my website, I've got a blog, I've been registering on loads of business directories, and I've been doing a small amount of blog posting etc.

However, it's all adding up to nothing, as far as I can tell.

I've decided to switch hats and give the black one a try.

If anyone could help me figure out what I need, I'd really appreciate it.

Basically, just a list of programs I need to start with, etc, and the kind of things I need to do.

I'm working my way through this website, and there's hours, days even, of reading, and it would be great to get a little head start so I know which direction to go in.

    Thanks in advance.

Why go black when you haven't fully implemented white?

Start with your website... optimize for on page seo.. get everything up to snuff (title, meta, keyword density, etc..).

Then focus on building backlinks. That's the real key to whitehack seo. You're building content, that's good, though it needs to be keyword rich for the terms you're targeting. You're registering on business directories.. which is ok, but won't really get you web traffic.

What you need to do is build backlinks with anchor text that is the same as the terms you're trying to target. This needs to be diverse and across a ton of domains of varying authority and page rank.

southbayboredom's advice is good, you may even be able to rank with just good onsite. I wouldnt start spamming away quite yet. As this is your own business website you can take a longer term strategy with it and you dont want to do anything that could have a negative impact later down the line.

If you are using wordpress then upload all in one seo plug in and fill that in. If you are not using wordpress then switch to wordpress.

Build some quality web 2.0 using unique content which you either write yourself or outsource. Do some press releases, write some articles, do some social bookmarking. If you want suggestions of services to use then PM me.

For an uncompetitive keyword this will probably be enough to rank or at least give you a better idea of how hard the site will be to rank.

    Good luck.

Have you created your local Google listing and optimized it fro your local keywords? Depending on competition in your area, this may be faster to gain some exposure.

    Hi dude,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I should've been clearer. Been doing this for over two years, and rank reasonably well with very, VERY specific searches, but would prefer a bit more general dominance.

I don't know if I qualify as havinf really dipped a toe in the this poind, but I have so far done everything you've listed.

I think I played down what I've done so far. I spent about 9 hours today building backlinks, for instance.

Hi Webay, thanks for the offer, I'll send you a PM in a sec.

I have wordpress and the SEO all In One plugin. I think one of my main areas is figuring out how to build decent keywords.

I've got a few questions that have been raised after reading your post, but I'll ask in the PM!

    Thanks dude

Yep, have Google listings all fixed up. Again, though, not sure if my keywords are great.

When trying to figure out a keyword, are you literally just imagining what other people will be typing into Google, or is there a larger science behind it?

Also, can I rank higher in general by using keyword that may not be relevant to my business, but will increase general traffic levels?

OK, what about buying backlinks, is that something that's worth doing?
