i was wondering if anyone just focused their seo to a few landing pages instead of 1 huge website with a bunch of pages. I understand the purpose of long tailed keywords but I wanted to focus my efforts into a few targeted keywords.

I have a site that is strictly a landing page. It ranks #2 out of 20 Million competing sites.

It's harder to get a single page (landing page) to the top but it IS possible. Keep building links until you're there.

Could creating a micro site with each page acting like a landing page for specific keywords but all interlinked work?

It really depends on what kind of competition the keywords have.

Almost anything can be done with enough work, the big question though: Is it worth your time?

Do the keyword(s) get enough searches to make it worthwhile?

Depends on what all your goals are and where you're planning on getting traffic from. You could do both, create a full site and have sub-pages that are singled off/squeeze pages. Pump links to both the homepage as well as the individual pages.

If you're doing PPC, then test test test and drop what doesn't convert
