Not sure if I should put this on White Hat forum, but lets try this first.

Got a request to do a SEO for small/medium size company. This my first job I would be doing to someone else than myself, and Im not really sure how much I should ask for? And should I give them price by hour or by results (visitors/SERP)?

Keywords they are targeting are easy/medium/medium-hard competition, but it should be quite easy to get some improvement. Onpage SEO is not that good either.

Also, you who have done jobs to small/medium size companys, do you just do what you allways do or do you have some more white hat solutions when doing jobs to others?

If you like, you can PM me with your skype so we can discuss in more detail. Thanks!

Don't charge by hour or performance. Charge by what results you can bring them. Ask yourself, if you were in their shoes, how much would a first page ranking be worth to you?

Most of the time, it is high $XXX to mid $XXX.

I charge by the month. I would charge by results but I like keeping my clients after getting them to the front page by adding more keywords, etc. I think the retention rate of a client that pays on results would be lower after they get to the front page. But, everybody is different.

Since it is your first client, maybe get some free quotes from some top SEO companies and then make your price lower. I perform the same marketing for my sites and my clients sites, but I am by no means a complete black hatter. I do white hat and gray hat, and a little black hat for 2nd tier sites.

Hmm, you say dont charge by performance and then that charge by results? Is that a same thing actually? Also, not sure if I want to promise them anything like 1st page position etc, because you cant really know for sure, and dont want to give promises I cant be sure I can keep.

I definitely think charging by the month is the way to go if you arent 100% sure of yourself yet. Tell them you will give them "1 month of Premium Dedicated SEO Services" for $XXX per month. Usually $300 to $700 depending on how much time you want to spend on their site.

Thanks for the tips. Im pretty sure they are after 1 time price, and actually that fits better to my plans also. Care to share how much you would charge for this kind of job? Guess I could share that they are paying high $xxxx for sites redesign...

Do always a free review pack for your buyer, so they may feel comfortable working with you.

Price quote for medium scale company's go around 500$ per month.

    Thanks

I just finished writing up a proposal with the following pricing options:

1: 1300 a month for a really tough keyword set, minimum 6 month contract. I outlined the link building strategy, what links I'd buy and how long the company can expect for it to take to rank in the first page for the keyword set.

A keyword set includes 1 extremely tough high search volume and potentially well converting keyword, and a hunch ignoring tail associated keyword to go along with it.
    Example:
    Primary: iPhone cases
    2: iPhone cases leather
3: iPhone cases with money clip

    Hope this helps.

Good luck with you'r first job. In my opinion it's best to charge monthly and for results for example 50$ for top 10,100$ for top 5,200$ for top 3 and 400$ for top 1 monthly for one keyword.

If it is your first client I would do as suggested above, get free quotes from other seo firms for the keywords and beat the quote, you will soon after doing many jobs get the hang of relevant pricing that is good profit for yourself whilst a good deal for the client. You will missquote at times (whether it be a small profit for your self or overquote where you don't get the job) but it's all in the learning process.

Maybe to get a testimonial out of it go for the lowest profit you can accept and use it to get further work etc?

Good luck with the job too! :)

I try to base it on KW difficulty or at the very least what they would pay with adwords.

So using the KW tool for an exact match I research how much a biz could likely spend if they maxed out their budget for that KW on a given month, then I try to come in about 15% or so lower.

The client I have now could have expected to pay around $1500 p/month for just ONE of the KW's he wanted to target if he used adwords, so I am charging him $1200 p/month and he gets the benefit of also ranking for several other, related terms.

    Make it about value.
And yes, i have a signed 6 month deal for that. I start with a year but they resist 100% of the time, then I go down to 6 months or even 3 if they really push.
