    I thought I'd do a post regarding some "step by step" things I do when looking at SEO ... and ensuring that you can get a top ten listing quickly.

    I like using real examples ... and I'll pull one from my own site.

    We'll use the keyword term "meta expires". It currently ranks #8 and brings semi-decent traffic. However, getting in the "top three" should at least triple the incoming uniques.

    Here is a currently screen-shot of the ranking in Google.



    Step One: Verify the keyword phrase converts visitors into buyers and supplies a profit. Note: This phrase isn't one of those due to competitive reasons.

    Step Two: Check the cache of the page. We want to make sure the page is at least "15 days fresh."



    This page was last indexed five days ago, so it is fresh.

    Step Three: Verify Projected Traffic Levels for the Keyword. This can get a little tricky as if I go into WordTracker it tells me there are no searches for the keyword:



    However, if I pull my stats over the last 30 days, this is what I get:



    First of all, looks like I have work to do on this page because of the 90% bounce rate ... ouch. What you should take from this is that keyword research tools like WordTracker, while they are good, don't have perfect data, and when it comes back and says there are no searches for the phrase over the last 100 days and my stats show 108 referrals over the last 30, somebody's data is wrong. The one aspect which could be affecting WordTracker's data is that this is a keyword phrase that no one is currently bidding on in AdWords. So that could be why their data is zero - but as you can see from my stats, people are searching for it. What is the best solution? My personal favorite is Theme Zoom, but they are currently closed and I don't want to show you a tool you can't get right now.

    To be clear, the best indicator on how good a keyword is in terms of popularity isn't the cost per click, it is the number of advertisers. The more advertisers the more likely there is profit being made by someone.

    Step Four: Verify there is room for you in the market. I suggest using the tool NicheWatch and inputting the keyword and your target page for analysis. Here is a portion of the output.



    These three indicators, which aren't perfect, but allow us to quickly determine what it is going to take to move up in the Top Three results. In red is my page. It is listed at the top by default to compare with the rest of the results, and it is listed at position #8 in the SERPs. As you compare the columns, do you notice that the two outside columns are mostly filled in, compared to the sparsely populated middle column? This suggests that incoming anchor text and on-page factoring are most important in terms of ranking for this keyword phrase.

    Now looking at the rest of the report from NicheWatch, we learn that my page uses the term just once, but the sites in the Top Five rated web pages don't use the term at all. Well, we want to verify that, and that is our next step.

    Step Five: Running IBP is a good idea and is the program of choice for me when it comes to SEO. Is their info perfect? No. But they have the best information out there in terms of an SEO package and it is easy to understand and execute.

    Granted we are running this check on a general page about meta tags, not one that is specific about just the Meta Expires page. The result from IBP? A pathetic 69%.

    Okay, so the optimization sucks for that term, which is expected since it is generic page. Now, if I rank #8 for the term on a general page, it would make sense that I could nail a double-listing for this term, per Andy's video, just as the site which ranks #1 for the term has... the coveted double-listing. So, let's do it.

    Step Six: We create a focused page on the Meta Expires tag that links to the general page and we upload it to the server.

    The page is up and live, but, not indexed yet. Let's fix that.

    Step Seven: Write a blog post and use the keyword phrase in the same location as the Title of your page. In this instance, I used it in the beginning. If you have the main Web 2.0 services in your ping list, Google should come and index this post in about three hours - which will get the ball rolling in our favor.

    Step Eight: Let's rerun IBP on the new page and see how it fared:

    Okay, that is a lot better at 87% and you can just skim through all the items in "RED" to ensure there aren't any BIG issues. Mostly, the RED issues are that there aren't any links detected, which makes sense because it is a new page.

    My advice is if you get a rating of 85% or better, move on. The page is good enough. You can spend an hour on a page and only get a 2-3% increase. There are better uses for your time.

    Step Nine: Run SEO Elite to find places to get links that the competition has already found. I cut to the chase and ran the report on the #1 page listed. According to the report, the page has 94 unique domains linking to it with an average PageRank of 2.2. In fact, there are NO incoming links using the anchor text "meta expires". What does that mean? If we pick up about a dozen links or so, we should be able to capture a top three spot inside of 30 days.

    That's it. We'll revisit this next week to see how it fared, and show how we can make a few tweaks here and there for improvement.
