As title says, is manual forum posting in signature and profile still effective as part of a mixed backlink profile?

If so, how niche related does it have to be?

    Thanks! :)

It plays a really small role. Key here, is to avoid spammy posts and keeping it informative& relative to the forum thread.

There was/is a recent thread about this on the Google forum and the Google guy from Europe stated it was considered spam if it is in your signature and profile. People were upset and asked for clarification and I didn't follow the thread. From what I have seen tracking follow/no follow links it's getting much harder to get followed links from high level forums. My advice is to use a tool to check if the links are followed/no followed or if they are against the forum policy (which seems to be common too) so you don't get booted by the moderators.

If you can place good links they are still valuable. You need to do some research to make the best use of your time.

Just to be on the safe side. It's good practice to engage in the forum's thread conversation and then drop in the link (in a natural way). Most importantly, limit yourself to a few forum posts a week 3-4. * Don't link straight to your money site (in most cases), maybe a relevant blog post on the subject discussed (which the visitor will look around your site anyway)

OP forums are meant for growing in a community. So, you see, when you focus on getting mixed with the community along with some indirect promotions, it gives out much better results than that of focusing on getting backlinks.

Forum Posting can often be No - Follow, but, I have used them to GREAT success in the past. How?

I use it to drive traffic by being an awesome poster. No magic to it. After a while you will learn that the No - Follow link may help balance out your portfolio if it is on a high value domain and you have raw anchor text or to your home page.

Forums are for direct traffic, not SEO benefit. If you get SEO benefit, I consider it a bonus.

It would be best to try out this strategy by obtaining links from niche related forums.
