As the title says...I am wondering if doing SEO for yahoo is a waste of time when you consider the resulting search results are supplemented by BING results and well BING owns Yahoo.
One example is should I bother with yahoo answers anymore for seo purposes ?

Optimise for Google... Yahoo and Bing are just a little extra on the side.

Don't forget social media for traffic, no algo is gona screw you.
    There is also PPC too....

I don't waste my time w/ Bing & Yahoo... they just don't drive enough traffic to bother with.

When Google is the BIG one around then why bother to make effort for other small tots.

I strive to increase my traffic all the time - but get as low a percentage as possible from one source.
It's about managing your risk profile.

No major site of mine has more than 65% of it's traffic from Google, the established ones I've pushed Google down to the low 50's (and that's where it sticks - can't get lower than that AND keep increasing traffic levels).

If Google goes ker-phut - or desides I should go ker-phut... I only lose 50% of my traffic. I can recover from that.
If I was "Google only" and they de-indexed me - i'd be fecked.

One day Google will go (bound to happen at some point) one scandal, one missed opportunity with a new "feature" that someone else gets and patents first, one massive financial feck up, one major mistake regarding personal information that the media jumps on and decides to highlight globally - or just continuing to turn their listings into a shopping mall for the big players (which is not what 75% of surfers want) and they'll be gone.

I don't want to have one upstream business partner only. One partner who does whatever the hell they want with no regard to my buisiness at all. Do that in the real world and financial analysts would say you were recklessly stupid - but seems people love to jump into bed with Google and Google alone in the virtual world, despite the fact they are a despotic unreasoning behemoth that would spit you out and feck you up as soon as look at you.

It depends on the country. Here in Taiwan, everyone uses Yahoo.

    1. Think about your site's niche and what countries would be interested in it.
    2. Find what search engines those countries use.
    3. Optimize for those search engines.

    Simple as that.
