Hi guys,

I need a white hat solution for this. I have asked many people now, & can't seem to find a definitive answer...

I was wondering if it is possible to use special CSS tags above the h1 tag in order to use as a kind of "Master Header" (above h1).

I am trying to make a Master header for my human visitors, but include the important keyword in the h1 tag underneath, to please GoogleBot.

Please see this link to view the 4 options:

[sorry, please copy & paste link into browser, then add the 3 missing dots]

Thank you.

Avery

PS: I have already ruled out the "large type" h6 tag, positioned above the h1.

Your title is your master header. The title is always above or usually above the <h1> tag. If you use wordpress and the all in one seo package you can get the extra blog title. Hmm hope this helps. John

Hi John. Thanx 4 getting back to me on this.

Just to clarify... I'm not using wordpress. It's a hand made HTML and CSS styled site.
Also, the master header (if you see my link) is not a reference to the web-page main Header/Banner Image. It's just meant to be a Text Heading that's a bit more noticeable then the h1, and positioned just above it.

It's meant as a title to be used on 3 or 4 pages that I want to look like they're all in the same section / category.

Why do you think there is a problem having text above h1? I have had keywords h1'd in middle of an article styled with floats etc so that the h1 text looked like normal article text.

It gave me a significant boost for those keywords without any problem.

Is there some rule that nothing can be above h1 somewhere?

btw very interesting stuff in the main page :P

if it is going to contain keywords, i'd use an h3 or h4 tag. ipopbb did a case study here with tag rankings. If i recall correctly, h3 was ranked higher than h1.

edit: By the way... ^^ i also enjoyed your page! I just got done going through the HeadFirst book on HTML and CSS, so i appreciate what you did there... asking the question with your site.

Hey thanks guys *

and as for the mention of the thread by "ipopbb" ... just done a search:

What on Earth did he do to test each tag? Looks very interesting.

:) Ciao

He explained it several times, quite in depth, but i never knew enough to fully understand how it was pulled off. Basically he has a ton of VERY simple sites with 100% unique keywords surrounded by various tags. He does a search in google for the keyword and sees how google sorts them all, because the only difference between all the pages is the 1 tag which he has placed the keyword in.

Beyond this general explanation, he definitely has helped people get similar tests up and running... as i understand, it is really not THAT complicated, just something i've never looked into.

Anywho, obviously you know how to use search (which is incredible for a new user, heh), but here's the latest Tag rankings thread..

..and here's the thread where he explains exactly how he pulls it off, and also give you the files to replicate it yourself.

Why not make it a picture. It's not like they would copy the title or anything. Googlebot doesn't read images yet. You are safe. Just make the background make it look like a title good enough for the visitors.

Thanks again folks :)

One thing tho... say the "image file" method gets the OK according to GoogleBot, but what happens if a competitor notices what I've done and decides to complain to Google?

Can this actually happen? And if so, what are the consequences?
