How would one go about doing effective SEO on a very large e-commerce site? Obviously its hard to target each and every page. Would it be better to go after the category pages and let the SEO juice drip down to the individual product pages?

    Any input/suggestions etc?

Hmmm well I would say it depends on the keyword research you've done. If there's traffic around very specific terms, optimize those pages first. If the traffic that is more general is not super competitive, I would target the subcategories.

    Basically:
If "3mm stainless steel widgets" has 600 searches per month, and is valued at 1.50 per keyword, If rank #5, I get approximately 5% of the traffic, I just "made" 45 worth of traffic.

If "widgets" gets 10,000 searches per month and is valued at 3.00 but I think I'll only get ranked at #9, I only get around 3% of the traffic, I still "made" 900 dollars worth of traffic.

    Do the math:
searches x value/click x % of traffic = overall "value" of the keyword.

Then go with the words that are worth something. Plus, you get to show your client how "valuable" the traffic you built was. Clients always like stuff like that, it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy.

Going for categories is what would suit you best (with exceptions on very popular products). If you have a website for pet accessories, one keyword/category to go for ranking would be "dog accessories" and the person lands there and can list through your products.
