What did you guys do when it came to contracts? Did you get a lawyer to write one out? Write it yourself? or modify a contract template?

This is a subject I know next to nothing about so any advice would be appreciated. I need airtight contracts that protect my business for the cheapest price possible.

Write that shit yourself or hire someone if you don't think you can handle it. Get an LLC too if you haven't yet. Or whatever the UK equivalent of that is.

I definitely cannot write it myself, I ain't no lawyer! I was thinking about getting a lawyer to modify a contract template and adjust it to my service structure. Then add any additional details - it should become cheaper in theory & yep, already a LLC.

A contract needs to guarantee that you get paid and your customer gets the work, it should set dates and deadlines and that's probably all.

If you can afford a lawyer, then get one.

If your whole contract is 1000 dollars, don't spend 1000 on a lawyer.

If your contract is worth 200k then by all means hire someone.
