Just wondering if any SEOers here would be up for a SEO contest.

I have seen a TON of people asking for the "best service" or the "Best SEO Guy" here... So why not make a contest to make it official?

What I am thinking is a bunch of people enter, grab a cheap domain name, find a keyword that has no competition, and see who can get the top spot. (That way its just a BHW contest)

I think it would be a cool way to see who is "best" and who can talk shit.

If you are an SEOer and are interested post here. Maybe if it gets enough attention the admins here can set up a contest.

    Proposition:
Only people selling SEO already on BHW can enter
Each person would need to buy a new domain name that is not niche relevant/no PR/no Authority
We find a keyword with say 5-10k searches with low-mid competition.
Winner takes all -- As in winner gets to keep all the domains that were entered into the contest. (which would mean they would own the first page of Google for the search)

Let me know what you guys think...

And how will you know when its time to declare a winner? Certain methods work faster but are good for short term only while other methods take awhile but will have long term effects.

It has to be a made up word with absolutely no competition. I'd be interested if only for bragging rights!!

I think somebody suggested this not long ago but they were told it wasn't allowed, something about competitions not allowed on the forum.

thats right, I don't think competitions are allowed, although a prizeless one might be.

I don't think anyone will go for it though. If there is no natural competition for the keyword, then the contest will literally be, who can throw the most time and resources at it, which sounds like a waste of time to me.

Would be more interesting if someone done some keyword research and found a really good keyword (and was willing to share) and then have a competition for that keyword - at least then, entrants would have some incentive to actually rank for it, and first place would bring a natural prize!

All competitions have to be admin approved so you'll have to contact a staff member with your request but I'd definitely like to see it happen.

LOL! No one will compete because they are afraid of losing. A lot of people talk shit, that's for sure.

You know what would be really funny? None of the sites make it to the top 10.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I have thought about it before and would be up for it.

Do away with the Prize element so its only a harmless exercise with a bit of Kudos attached.

An independent person does the keyword research and selects a selection of keywords of similar difficulty which are handed out at random..Otherwise I would be choosing "green wicker garden furniture in bristol"

Results are checked monthly, so the leaderboard is based over time. Lets be honest everyone will be on Experteons recently rehashed 301 method and blasting the shit out of sites that will rank for two weeks. So you will get a better idea of who can hold a rank over time which to me is the whole point of seo.

    Your idea won't work unless:

    1) All the providers try ranking on the same niche, same keyword.

    2) On-page seo for all competing sites is done by the same person not related to the contest (90% services on the BST are link building related, offering punctual services, NOT full link building, and it will be irrelevant for each participant to do his own on-page because it won't tell you much about the value of their off-page service)

    3) No one does nSEO on contest competitors (very hard, close to impossible to enforce that, or find the perp who done it)

    4) The rankings must stick (any half branied monkey could rank a site for a couple of days and weeks, but very few can rank a site that stays on the SERPs for a long time) - so it will take a while to determine the winner.

    5) There must be 3 classes of competition, low comp, middle and high comp for the winning service to be relevant.

    6) The ranking websites would need proper analyzing and judging regarding the backlink strategy for a better transparency. Who stops a guy who sells tiered web 2.0's on the BST to outsource the link building to a SAPE link builder and rank top 1? His/hers win won't give you insights on the quality of his/hers service but the impact in the winning BST seller's service will be phenomenal "Hey buy from me!! I'm the best SEO'er in the whole BHW!!!" That statement would be enough, no sales letter needed.

Motive for no.5: If you choose a low comp niche and all contestants fight for it, the winning SEO'er and his/hers service will be ok for low comp keywords but if someone buys that service for a high comp niche there are chances the client won't rank -> False advertisement.

IMHO, this contest won't happen on BHW. There's no one with know-how who'd spend his time organizing and judging this contest in the proper way FOR FREE.

Let's do as we did before and let the reviews do the talking (sure they can be manipulated but, with little research, a quality service can be spotted a mile away).

I disagree with this point. I think the competition should test your SEO abilities to the max, and that should include onpage.

    Even if this is allowed...

I cannot see it getting off the ground as many BST sellers would not want to go transparent...

Meaning true results would likely bring stats that let's say would be unexpected...

Doesnt have to be anything to do with BST sellers..just a bit of fun between guys who are not worried about their reputation.

Without doubt I have no chance of winning but I would enter for the craic.

    And why is that relevant?!

Most BST sellers don't care about your On-page. They don't analyze and offer advice on your on-page before starting to deliver the service. Most provide you with a report that is 100% compliant to their sales letter so you get what you've paid for, nothing wrong with that but that isn't real SEO, that's just outsourcing tasks.

Almost no BST seller is offering on-page optimization.

Of course if a BST seller who really knows SEO (very few these days) should do his own on-page that will bring better results than the AS-IS service applied to sites with little to no on-page, but that won't provide a REAL and objective perspective.

Duffers is right. There should be a contest just for the fun of it, no prize, just the BHW glory :).

If there is ever going to be an SEO Contest for non BST members, I'll be up for it. As WizGizmo is working for the Matt Cutts, I wouldn't participate if he joins the contest.

How about we find a keyword with no results at all, then every single person tries a different method, then we see what order all of the sites rank in and compare methods and ranking positions?
