[SEO Basics] Crawling vs Indexing – Don’t Mix Them Up

Seen too many people treating crawling and indexing as the same thing. They’re not.

• Crawling = bots land on your page, scan it.
• Indexing = page is stored and made available for ranking.

Here’s the kicker: crawling doesn’t promise indexing. If content is weak, blocked, or already exists somewhere, it won’t be added.

If you’re running projects and notice pages crawled but not indexed, don’t assume it’s just “Google being slow.” Often it’s about content signals, duplication, or how the site is structured.

This is helpful for beginners, but I must admit your post reminded me of LinkedIn posts lol. Crawling and indexing are basically two steps in the same process. Google has to crawl before it can index and in practice most SEOs talk about them together because the issues often overlap. The real challenge is not just separating the definitions, it is figuring out why crawled pages do not make it into the index.
