If you don't want to reveal your secrets in the open, feel free to PM me your info and we can chat that way.

    Otherwise,

I'm building sites for local businesses in a certain niche with roughly 30 hits per month on the currently focused keyword. I'm yet to build the site yet, but the plan is to build the site, rank it, and then sell it to the customer since the site is already ranked and getting traffic. I'm wondering how to go about it:

Do I simply build a "b-stock" website with general info and toss their phone number on the front page? This seems like the easiest approach, but would possibly grant a lower conversion rate.

Do I build them a specific site for their website? This is the least likely in my opinion, a lot of work for someone that can drop me at any second.

Or, do I 301 redirect to their site after building a decent site? This seem easy, however if their onsite SEO is poor the site could drop in SERPs and make me work again.

Is there something I'm missing? Please, I would love the help!

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it should be relatively easy to rank for long tail keywords when it comes to local business.

    For example, target the keywords

    'your industry your city'
and you should be able to do that with the most basic of backlinking strategies.

Right, I'm not worried about ranking - more interested in how the site setup and transfer is done. Once I lease the site to them for the month/year/whatever.

What are the strategies people are using for these types of sites? Sample sites would also work if you can give a brief description of your strategy.

They pay you to build the site.. then pay you for hosting. Hello Residual income... You can bill them for 10-25 per month.

I've actually considered doing something like "Business Websites for $47 per month - no contract"...

Sure.. doesn't seem like a lot of money.. but you could upsell with email lists, SEO services, etc.... and it's residual. Over the course of a year.. you're looking at $600 per month. You buy a cheap hostgator account for $15 per month... and a domain for 10 a year... and Bam... you're looking at a great profit.

Rinse... find a new customer and repeat.... x 50 ;-)... that would be $2350 per month. A lot of customers rather not pay big $$$ up front... but rather throw them on a paypal subscription.

If they cancel.. you own the site and the mail list... TaaDaa!

Right, and I've done that for a few clients.

What I'm looking to do now is rank for a few domains I'm squatting on. "industry + city" keywords and rank the site #1 in google, then sell the traffic/site/ranking to a local business. This way they don't come to me, but rather I can approach them with a site and keyword already ranking and receiving traffic, and then charge them high monthly fees. If they decide to drop me, I just find a new business and slap their name on the front page for a new revenue stream.

    Does that make sense?

I am rolling out a local business marketing product right now in a few niches, in a few markets. We build a basic site/blog. Rank it for a keyword we choose...and get it ranked in top 5. Then we sell a package to a local business in that niche on a Pay-Per-Lead basis.

We brand the site for the customer, use voip phone servers to track/record all calls, and we charge the customer $20+ for every call they get. The better we rank, the more money we make. EZ to sell because they don't pay anything up front, only when they get results. The sites perform great because I am damn good at laying out sites and getting the conversion (phone call). 4 calls a day from the website you are looking at $2400/month per account. Sell a new one per week...Did I mention this was really easy to sell?

I will probably write a thread on the whole process once i have it all together.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I realized my original post was pretty vague, so I'll edit it to reflect my question more accurately.

Would you mind PMing me a sample site so I can get a feel for your layout?

Very smart, we're doing the same thing. City, State Niche ... so many cities out there, so many great keywords that you can get on the 1st page. Run the site a few weeks/months.. rank it, sell it!
