Hey everyone, i would just like your opinions on which would be the better option. Ranking local websites and selling the leads or selling seo services to local businesses?

What are the criteria you want us to base this advice on? The real answer, with the question as is, is "it depends".

First off, what are YOU most comfortable with, and why? And, are you willing to get outside your comfort zone (e.g. maybe you greatly fear sales, or person to person interaction)? That might be your deciding factor.

I'd go for ranking the site and selling the leads if you're comfortable selling the leads. At the end of the day, you'll control the asset and if the client stops paying for/doesn't want the leads anymore you still have a site ranking and can "just" find someone else to buy the leads.

Right. If OP wants a business he can more easily turn on and off, selling leads would be it. One downside to think of, how many plumbers (as an example) can one sell plumbing customer leads to? Of course, this depends on the size of the target geography, and how one can segment the incoming leads. It is also easier for competitors to jump in, long term.

If he is looking for a long term business with more growth opportunity (in this world of two choices the OP has given us), selling SEO services is probably the bigger one. Again, a lot of assumptions are behind this opinion, including that of skill, desire, goals/objectives, local market size, etc..

Selling leads for quick in and out, and not requiring a lot of commitment. No reason to not do both, though.

ROI (return on investment) should always be your primary focus. Get more with less. LEss time, less effort, less money, for the most money.

Why not have a main website like I do and offer both SEO packages and pay per lead package. Although with the PPlead, make sure you have an extremely good relationship with your clients. Interview them, ask them questions, ask their employees questions, and there's a really good response by BreaknBrix on this if you want to learn more.
