how do you guys operate?
do you rent an office or work from home? Or do you have any other kind of arrangement? like using a floor separate for office.
I am thinking of buying a new home to use one floor as my office, But I am not sure to do I need any this kind of arrangement.
this will double the basic expense and I can be only at one place. what do you think of this idea? One can use a separate floor of the home to be used as an office.

what kind of arrangement you think is good. It would be supportive if you can tell what arrangments of a location for the home and the office you like.

I guess it depends how much space you need and what you need from an office. I am not in India, but I do work from home and I just have an office (single room). It suits me fine.

If I needed a place to bring clients, or I had more staff then I would need a different arrangement.

I work from my bedroom.
Proud Bedroom office owners !!!
Working alone currently. You can try both and compare results.
I batter search for someone who has tried this.

I do not need that much space, I just need a place for my table and chair, in my work no client need to visit and i am least interested in bringing someone to my workplace. IT is just the family forcing, every old fella in my family is suggesting to make an office, to them it does not look good that you stay all day at home.

You are right. You should get a separate office for work. If someone work from home he is considered sitting at home and doesn't get respect.
A good office is necessary to work.
There is no respect to work from home.

Ideal scenario is a room at the top of the house, end of the garden which is your dedicated workspace.

UK there's also tax benefits / disadvantages to working from home, so check your accountant for advice on that to see what Indian tax allowances are. You can claim for part of your heating, lighting etc but it must be in proportion, but when you come to sell your house if you've done that you need to factor that in. You'd be saving on rent though so that is a plus point. It's probably different in India, but better safe than sorry.

Commuting can be a pain in the arse, again the UK you get gridlocked roads, constant road works and a couple of leaves or 1mm of snow and there's chaos on the train network.

Disadvantages from working from home is that you someties spend far too long working, it's difficult to get the downtime you need and depending on your mindset, you could find it tempting to have an extra hour in bed, or go watch cricket on tv...

Well, I’m a 100% advocate for the home office. I’ve been in this setup for 3 years and it works very well - I have a business broadband line, business VOIP phone and a decent office pc.

So nobody really needs to know I’m in a home office and when people do know I think they appreciate it - remember if you have high costs such as an office you might think it portrays a lavish image but sometimes this puts people off - because who ultimately pays for that office? (Hint, your clients do).

If only that is the reason , you will not be able to continue it for long.

office for what? freelancing? I don't think so.

Get used to it. This is common for all almost Asian people working from home.
I completely agree with this.

Yes, I have tried a rented place before, I have all the comfort set up at home, Why do I have to go to a place and set all things again just to show off that I owe an office.

I knew how I work, I will be staying 5 night a week in my office.
Now I have Pro and Cons for me
Pro >
saving on a lot of stuff like Internet, couch, basic requirement for a place.
Great food at home with an automatic clean room with food on time.
one and only other person in my family can see me and it does not feel lonely

cons
people think I stay all-time at home.
every visitor at home can disturb me and I can not say no.
the temptation for wanting more movies and doing some time-wasting stuff
truly

Indian tax system has too many loops, $10K income can be easily kept without paying any income tax, and family is very supportive, if you ask to use their bank account, it will be easy to have 2-3 accounts. So you can get away with $25K annually easily, without any regestration. withou any tax.

I must agree - distraction is an issue, I am well disciplined myself but I get distracted when I have to answer the door to visitors etc.

Even if you are working from home. Its better to have a proper workstation (Not bedroom) where you can have access to everything properly and if you dont have that better to create one or just move to a coworking space.

I have spent a lot of time working from home and I must say its not the best option in my opinion since those distractions and freeness becomes a hurdle sometimes. Currently I am in a Coworking space and liking it even though I don't have the same leisure like home but still, it makes me more disciplined.
