Thanks for viewing the thread guys,

ok so here is the idea

My site is targeting a profession within the UK

I want to have a forum on the site (but the main backbone of the site is not the forum)

The idea is for these people who are in this profession to sign up at a monthly cost (probably free to start) - Once signed up they get there own thread within their local area in the forum (possibly a bio page on the actual website as well)

Then general people will use the site in order to find these profession people local to them to use

I want to know how best to implement this kind of this. Are there any CMS or other web software out there.

I am aware of wordpress and its membership style stuff, but i am not sure if i want to go down the WP route this time.

Another CMS you can use is Joomla. I use it on all my websites and am quite fond of it. Tonnes of plugins for it as well as free templates. Idea sounds pretty good, I have a friend that is doing that exact thing here in Australia though he hasnt started charging people to be on it. Still trying to grow the numbers.

why dont you use a wordpress site instead of a forum?
you could make a wordpress-seo-directory where the people post their own local.
