I'd like to put up an Amazon affiliate site so I decide to see what I could rank for and started researching keywords for Amazon stuff.

For a change I've been following cyberzilla's method :- Using Scrapebox I generated a list of maybe 3K words, I then in groups of 100 ran em through Google's Keyword tool. I got down to about 40 that appeared to be low comp but decent trafic, a min 100 local searches per-week.

I then swapped over to MS to check the SEO comp and I'm getting too much red, too many old high ranking sites with good back linking. I didn't get one good link out of the lot!!

There seems to be a big difference between Google's comp and the more detailed comp data from MS.

So what next do I just pick a new set of seed words and go again, or have I been dumb and missed something important?

Why do people look at competition on google keyword tool... ?

Add to your method all the keywords that have the minimum searches/month that you want. Forget the "Competiton" bat showed by Google Keyword Tool.

Now try again on MS with the new list, including those with medium-high competition showed by g()()le keyword tool.

Think how many, so called internet marketers, skip all those high competiton keywords shown in G K T... ;)

    Go get them.

    Tell us what you find.

    Cheers

You want low competition but higher search volume keywords.

You can't relay on MS for the competition for one simple reason: you never see if that authority site even targets your KW.

The good thing with authority sites is they rank even for KWs they dont target! Good news for you is if you do target them you can beat them without too much effort. I had a site with PR0 ranked with all other PR4s and PR5. all were authority sites which got up there because there was no other site specific to the micro niche i was targetting.

so your best guess is seo spy glass. Take a look and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Having a exact match domain helps tremendously just so you know so always try to get that.

Yeah, the competition graph in Google keyword tool has nothing to do with the amount of marketers working that keyword, it's the amount of advertisers bidding on that keyword! you'd seriously hope that anyone in this business would know that lol (but i guess it's more profit for the rest of us :D)
