How difficult would it be to write a script that registers on SMF forums and validates the account?

In PHP, the process wouldn't be too difficult, but creation from scratch with testing would just be time consuming when there are already programs that register on SMF, vB, IPB, phpBB, etc.

You would just need to build a database of common SMF POST fields for registration, use an HTML parser to build a list of all the input fields, compare the fields to your database and fill them in properly, set all unknown fields properly with their default values, and submit the form.

An errors would need to be compared against a database of errors and the correct field to change to fix the error, then execute the submit again.

Then repeat until the script identifies that registration is complete.

After that, a simple POP or IMAP e-mail downloading class will let you connect to your e-mail account, search for the SMF e-mail, and visit the activation link to finalize registration.

since it's my own forum I suppose I could disable the email validation requirement. I just want to create 20-30 accounts on my forum.

Well in that case, I'm sure there's already a script out there to automate accounts on your own install...else you can always do it manually if it came down to it. Couldn't take more than 2 hours, whereas writing a proper script could take a couple days.
