I appreciate a good comment spam attempt. I have actually let a few through on blogs I manage simply in appreciation for their inventiveness. And I happily spam away on occasion. But some lame script kiddie hit one of my sites with about a dozen spam comments this morning and I was not in the mood. Of course I grabbed his IP address. He is in a subdivision outside Boston. Believe it or not, he posted his real phone number on the whois. I called him (probably in his mom's basement): Is the John Doe? -- Yes Do you manage foo.com -- Um, yes You have been spamming multiple sites with messages like "foo." Did you realize your IP address is recorded when you do this? -- Um, um, um no. Do you realize this activity is against the law? Its a Federal offense? -- Sorry, no, I... Look, its cold out here. This is not how I wanted to spend my Monday. Turn off your computer, step outside, and we'll come up from the van and we'll talk, OK? If I have to knock on a door, it means paperwork. And I do not want to do paperwork. Don't make me knock, okay? -- [sounds of sobs] Okay. So if you live in the Boston metro area and see some kid standing in the snow outside his house in his pajamas, tell him he can go back inside now.
