I've done some scraping for trackbacks and by accident I checked one of the links if it was found on the page - I couldn't find it and I checked the source and it was hiding there!

I don't know WordPress much, but there must be a way to detect the fact that the trackbacks are hidden (I'm still not sure what the benefits to the webiste owner are...)

I'd much appreciate any help here, please PM me if you think it shouldn't be out in the open.

BTW - I've checked 2 or 3 of them and I couldn't find anything specific, there were fields that were template or theme dependent.

    Any WP or SB experts?

Well I have been checking some of my posted trackbacks and when I didn't find them I just thought that the "posted" was false. I have no idea what is the reason that webmasters would hide trackbacks in source.

What kind of footprint do you use? Do you harvest only wordpress or other platforms too?

Well, trackbacks will work only for WP from what I gathered...

As to the footprint - I'm still working on it.

I must say there is no real golden footprint for trackbacks, what I'm aware of. Eventually, I have my ways to scrape trackbacks on a good scale so I can compile my own quality AA trackback lists.
