Question 1: Why is my page not stabilizing in the #1 spot? It keeps going back and forth, between that and some random place on page 2. Is that normal?
Question 2: How do I check monthly searches on my keyword?

    It's called the Google Dance.
Search for that term here on BHW to learn more about it.

This can take few days to more than one month.
Just be patient, it will stabilize.

It's not a bad sign. At a first glance Google evaluated your site/page as being relevant for the keyword(s).
The next thing that matters now how it is holding up against the competition.

How did you check your ranking?
Hopefully not by checking the keyword in your browser because Google has some nasty tricks up its sleeve...:D

Also mods, can you please put FAQ somewhere in the title of my thread? Think it will help a lot of us newcomers if my learnings can compile a little mini FAQ database
