just a quick question, is Scrapebox illegal. Most of you spam blogs with comments, and email spam is illegal unless the receiver opt-ed in. So what is so different?

It all depends on what country you live in. Here in NZ, all electronic transmission of unsolicited commercial messages is now illegal - it doesn't just have to be email spam. However, enforcement is very lax, especially for non-email related stuff. There have been a few high profile prosecutions (including the guy behind Genbucks) but no one that I know of has ever been done for link spamming.

automating comment posting with an automation tools to blogs that automatically accept comments is rather different than sending an email to someone without their permission......of course quality counts and so there is a fine line to commenting randomly on unrelated blogs, try at least target blogs based on your niche or keyword....it's just a matter of time now before Google comes up with something that can detect spam comments!

The webmasters have the form on their site and want comments.

If they don't want your comments to show up, they can moderate it.

There is nothing illegal about that unless a government made opening comments on a site illegal which would be a horrible law.

it would be pretty hard to police that. If you are posting through proxies, they would have a hard time identifying the computer it came from. And they couldnt just assume the owner of the site the link points to is the culprit, or else you could get your competitors in trouble pretty quick.

Blog commenting with scrapebox will never be illegal. The blog owner allowed comments to be posted on his blog. That is like soliciting. It is then left for him to approve the comments or not. A comment marked as spam by one person might be approved by another person.

SPAM usually applies to e-mailling only.
You can't go to jail, BUT some ad networks won't like it if people complain (like : "XXX is spamming my blog, please ban his account"... and sometimes they will)

    Comment Spam is NOT illegal.

    Frowned upon? Yes.
    Illegal? No

If you don't use proxies and a dumbass webmaster complains to your ISP (or host if your using a VPS/Dedi) then you could have your account suspended/closed as it is almost always against their ToS. Unless you host with a bulletproof host (don't give 2 shits about abuse complaints).

Wasn't "the king of spam" just captured by the US government? He were supposed to be responsible for 1/6 of all email spam.

commenting on blogs is not the same as sending unsolicited email and can-spam laws just applies to sending unsolicited email.

...following your logic, using software such as Microsoft outlook, or online services such as gmail/yahoo would be questioned as illegal...after all, those are email services and one is more likely to send unsolicited email using these programs as opposed to Scrapebox.

Software such as Microsoft word/excel might be questioned illegal as i could use those programs to commit fraud. ie, write and send death threats, and adobe Photoshop might be questioned illegal since one could do illegal activities with it...like fake ids, counterfeiting money,
