School Accused of Secretly Spying on Students Through Laptop Webcams
    http://mashable.com/2010/02/18/school-spies-on-kids-through-webcams/

File under: ?Extremely Creepy? ? BoingBoing reports that a recent case filing in Robbins vs. Lower Merion School District, a Pennsylvania school, is a class action suit on behalf of students with school-issued laptops whose webcams have been used to watch the students and their families at home.

It was discovered that the laptops issued by the high school contained software allowing administrators to covertly activate the on-board webcam.

The plaintiff, Blake J. Robbins, was disciplined by the school for ?improper behavior in his home.? The evidence of said impropriety was brought forth by the school vice principal, who displayed a photo of Robbins taken by the laptop?s webcam.

TechDirt indicates a recent episode of PBS Frontline that contains video footage of an official at another school using a remote desktop application to spy on students in a similar way. He says almost proudly, ?They don?t even realize we?re watching.? In other words, school-sponsored surveillance might not even be uncommon.

You can read the full text of the case filing in the PA case: Robbins vs. Lower Merion School District (PDF). What do you think about schools spying on their students? As in other realms where this issue is becoming more prevalent, is the benefit of giving kids access to laptops worth the price of their privacy?

I bet. I would have issued them to all the girls and given instruction that these were special laptops, never to be shutdown.

This. I still point mine towards the wall when I'm not using it.

I remember the old days of the sub7 trojan where you could watch people's webcams.

That is f*cked up. Imagine the parents getting their freak on in the living room not knowing their being watched or a teen walking around in her underwear.

The question here is: "how in the hell the school disciplined the student for what he done in the privacy of his own home?".

WTF? How did that go down?

School officials: "Blake thanks for coming into our office today. Last night we seen you refusing to do your chores so we are going to have to punish you. Do you understand, Blake?"
    Blake: :yield:

This happened in the US. Already we Americans get a bad rep for having a poor education system. Guess this is why. Old men and old women too busy getting their freak on by watching teens. Why teach them when the teachers can jack off to them.

I hope the school officials are caught with a picture of a naked underage girl so they can be classified as pedophiles.

Interesting. I've heard cases about laptops being hacked and the hackers doing the same thing as well.

don't know if it's true, but would be good to keep your webcams covered if so when you're not using them.
