A pretty interesting question, as I know if I have a backlink for 2 domains, they'll work for both, obviously, but does this apply to subdomains?

Backlinks is to increase your PR so if your backlink point's to maindomain.com , that page wil increase in PR where the specific subdomain page will not gain anything on that.

but if there are links on your maindomain.com to sub.maindomain.com then people visiting there might find that it is possible to reach that sub.

also the robot's will also reach your sub from the backlink going via your maindomain to your sub.maindomain .

    Hope this helps.

Yes, but how are you planning on using this? You can get in trouble just by sheer volume of subdomains.
