Ok, so my twitter account from Feb. 2009 with 12K real followers was suspended today! Luckily I was able to reactivate the account, so it's not lost for good.

What are safe follow/unfollow limits these days? I've been doing the same numbers for years. I don't have the exact numbers right now because I can't login to that server from where I am.

Anyone with any experience on this? I don't want to get permanently suspended. I think you only have one chance once you've been suspended.

Sorry for your loss, I too am running into these same problems lately and I have even had 2 year old accounts that are only following 300 people a day suspended. So there is no rhyme or reason or dead set rules these days to understand and avoid the Twitter ban hammer. I would say follow less than 300 a day and add some fakes from Fiverr so you dont have to unfollow at all. Good luck OP!

Thanks. This came out of no where really. The account is totally legit. I just follow/unfollow and have automated tweets for my niche. There is nothing spammy at all. I will just have to follow way less I guess. Maybe twitter is just getting more aggressive with their "aggressive follow churn" terms.

Do you follow/unfollow at the same time? Maybe this is what got me. For a long time I'd follow 600 or so a day until I couldn't follow anymore, and then I'd unfollow 600 or for about a week to get my ratio back down.

Lately I've been following/unfollowing at the same time, but I've been doing this for a WHILE.

It is not just the follow/unfollow but also the frequency at which it is done.
Another reason could be the IP you were using got banned ( if using proxy )
Also, spam algos check your tweets and URLs for banned words

Lastly, there are many such stories where real accounts have been banned for absolutely no reason.

Overall, their spam algos are unintelligent and shitty - they just can't seem to understand the difference between real and bot accounts.

I was following 400 day / unfollowing 300 day. I've been doing this for quite some time. Maybe we should not follow/unfollow at the same time? Now I'm paranoid because I don't want to lose the account permanently. Don't they only give you one chance?

You know I may have been using a "private" proxy. I forget the setting. It's just been on auto pilot so long. I would RDP in, but something is funky with my RDP and I can't login right now. The account is turned "off" for now in Tweet Adder. Maybe it had to do with this. I'd have to check it to be sure though.

Tweets should be fine. I don't tweet hardly any links. If I do it's not spammy and related to niche. It's all fitness tweets, so I doubt it's the tweet content.

I know we can't change it and it's ultimately their rules, but I find it so stupid they even care how many you're following. I mean if you are REALLY abusing the system that is one thing, but I'm not.

UPDATE: I wasn't using a private proxy for this account. I was just using my own IP address (comcast). Since my account was first suspended I've laid low on twitter. I haven't even been running Tweet Adder or following/unfollow anyone. Now all the sudden the account is suspended AGAIN. I've filed a repeal, but this is complete bullshit.

I have been testing some brand new twitter accounts to see how far I can push them. I have had a few accounts re-instated 4 times. The 5th time seems to be the limit. Follow/unfollow churn rate seems to vary with how aggressive you follow.

Did you have to repeal to get the accounts reopened? I need to do some testing myself. I should have never messed with my follow/unfollow rate. I had upped it slightly and that seems to be what put me on the radar.

I just don't get that it was suspended again when I wasn't even using twitter since the 1st reinstatement.

I have a 2008 account, my personal account with around 12K followers as well. I have run through a number of different things over the years and never had a problem. I have followed 1,000 in a day and got the "you've reached your limit" message. I generally don't unfollow the very next day. I wait about 3 days to do the unfollows, if I need to. I have tested a lot of random thigns on that account and never had an issue.

One thing twitter looks at now, though, is the churning as well as number of outbound links you are posting. So i don't know their internal math or algorithm but it includes things like account age, follow/unfollow ratio, link tweets per day, profile customization, number of tweets per day, etc. They have an internal scoring system based on these things from what i hear and that is what will make them look at an account.

So if you recently posted a lot of links, or had some different behavior than normal OR, the big one.... connected their API to an app that has been flagged in the past.

Yes. it takes several e-mail appeals, you don't have to present a lot of evidence. Keep it simple - "Please help", beg for forgiveness - "I will stop following/unfollowin"

The key I found was to send several e-mails per day untill they tell you acct is dead or reinstated.

Just got another one reinstated for the 5th time today.

Thank you for the info! Let me ask you this. You know when you repeal and you get that automated email telling you to read the rules blah blah blah, and you have to respond to the email to keep the ticket open other wise your case will be automatically closed?

When you respond to that email are you supposed to get any type of automated confirmation like ticket opened or anything? So far I haven't heard anything back. I don't know if my case is open or not.

I opened an account about a month ago and have been following and unfollowing pretty aggressively after getting over 2K. I together, follow or unfollow between 1K and 1.5 each day and surprisingly haven't had any issues.

No confirmation with follow up e-mail. If you don't get a reply confirming your acct has been reinstated, start a new appeal. I have badgered them repeatedly, eventually they will respond, either telling you that your acct has been permantly suspended or reinstated. Persistence is the key.
