    I never understood the role that post tags play In On-page SEO. i usually set my robots.txt to block tags, author pages and date archives from indexation, so that they dont show up as duplicate content. Is there any benefit in letting tags get indexed and displaying a tag cloud in the footer or something like that?

    I read somewhere that tags help in getting some additional traffic. how does that work exactly?

    First thing: your site can be easier indexed by the robots, because it's average depth will be lower. (number of clicks from the home page to every other page of the site).
    Second: tags are the keywords of your site, I'm ranking for the tags like keywords better.

    Take care,
    D

    I let my tags get indexed and they bring in some decent traffic. If you follow SEO theory then yes, tags will be duplicate content. If you practice SEO then you know that Google doesn't care. They rank and they bring in traffic quite easily for long tails. Sometimes what Google engineers and gurus say and what the algorithm does are not the same.

    edit: Here's a great write-up that explains exactly why tags will rank even though thy are duplicate content;

    tags are like the more modern version of meta keywords. so long as you don't over do it they can help you.

    I agree with you LBrown, since I think the same. Goolge definitely tolerates what the folk do and consider it as normal, not as stuffing or spamming or something else. Thanks
