I'm thinking of ripping the one competition site and building enough backlinks to pass it. Is this a bad idea?

I've ripped people's sites in English and translated them into Spanish and Norwegian with success in the past.

If you plan to translate it, sure. Else, doubt it's a good idea

Actually, if someone plagiarizes your content/website you can issue DMCA request to their hosting company or even Google to remove the website.

I think it's more risk then worth it.

The sites I ripped, in my case, were really standard and were built using a template. So far I haven't had any problems

I might look into changing some lines in the CSS files to change the general colour of it and the edges of the buttons, for instance, though...

If it were my site that you ripped, i'd send a DMCA all over your ass. I think its too risky and your efforts are probably more useful doing other stuff

I have done it many times and still do. I do receive DMCA complaints every once in a while and change that site accordingly.

Be careful ripping sites where you are selling a product. Not only did I receive a DMCA complaint for this, They also complained to PP and it was a big mess. Even though our product was not the same.

I have learned to rip sites that I like and change certain things. If there is any videos on the site, I take them off. I make sure NOTHING is linking to the "REAL" site. I also may make changes in color and design. This had kept me in the safe zone for a while now. I have even resold some of the sites later on Flippa with no issues.

Meh just made my own. Looks almost as good as theirs and it took me 30 minutes. Looks better to me considering it's original. Though maybe I'll used to ripped files I got later ;)

Yeah I wouldn't do it. Plagiarism is a serious offense, even if you change it to a different language. That doesn't change the fact that it's plagiarism.
