i received a letter today claiming that i owed 3K in GST from a business that i had 10+ years ago.At the time, this was my first business and i never even collected GST ! so where do they come up with this? This is ridiculous.

Im thinking the goverment is so strapped for cash since they bailed out the lazy bastards that work for the Big Three making $80/hour so now they are randomly sending out these letters and making false statements.

Is it just a coincedent that i have few friends that told me they also received the exact same bogus letter within the last few weeks claiming that they owed money for GST ?

Im tired of getting raped by the system.Soon enough we will bet taxed for breathing too much air outdoors.

I ~almost~ got caught with this.
I had called the CRA for other issues and they brought it to my attention. Turns out that even if you dont collect GST, you still have to report it each year as nil to the gov't. If you do NOT do it, then they will check the category of business you are in and average the GST reports that your "competitors" are submitting and assign it to you. Unless you submit the form to claim nil, you are by default accepting what they assigned to you.

Lesson? Submit GST forms. Even if its for Nil.

Actually they only pull numbers out of a hat or base it on competitors if you didn't file your taxes for that year.
If you filed your taxes then it is based on that income you reported.

So you didn't have a GST number? As far as I know, you can register your business name and leave the GST number for the second year (unless you make over 30K in the first year)

If you did have a GST number, then you have to submit your T4 or T1 (depending if you are a Sole or Corp)

Tough luck. Thanks for sharing your story. I will be double cautious now that I am starting my own sole proprietorship.
