    Hi,

Are there any tools/services that can be used to give you an idea on how a site is ranking? I have a competitor site doing really well and would like to find out why? any ideas? or suggestions?

Do the seo research, just as you would your own site. Investigate his keywords, backlinks, sign up for his newsletter/email list and see what his campaigns are like, follow his promotional campaigns.

10 to 1 he is simply running a good service and promoting the heck out of it.

Sometimes you can get some idea of the traffic they are doing by going to google/adplanner . I check all my competition here. It is not all that comprehensive but if the competition doing good at adplanner it gives you a goal to shoot for.

Proper analysis of the competition is as aftershock has already said.

You can try compete dot com
    Also their alexa rankings
    Try quantcast as well.
All 3 should give you some juicy data :)
Use backlink watch or seo spyglass (free to find out about backlinks)

All of the above are free

Check for backlinks and analyze his site structure. He probably has lots of relevant content and has links to his subpages and not just homepage

You can get this data by using the site explorer of yahoo. It won´t tell you exactly how many blog links your competitors site has got, but it displays you how many backlinks he got from what kind of sites... It´s often quite helpful since you can go to these sites and try to get a backlink from there as well.

    Code:
    http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/
