Just thought I'd open up a discussion about the pros and cons of removing "powered by wordpress" from the bottom of your sites.

Verily, I haven't had any problems with leaving it up there, but people are always telling me to take it off, no idea why.

Here's how I see it (for taking it down):

    Pros:
You could be spammed by people searching for "powered by wordpress" (Remington)

    Cons:
lulz, now there's none here. (Deusdies)

    What do y'all think?

Let me guess... you smoke weed? lol

Leaving it there leaks a tiny bit of link juice + it looks lame

I thought of the 'looking lame' bit, but seriously, it's at the bottom of the page. Hopefully, by the time the visitors go to the bottom of the page they'll have clicked some ads already anyway.

I always delete it, along with any other links it (and/or the theme I'm using) tries to stick me with. The reason is a lot of BHers (ahem) like to search for "powered by wordpress" and then spam the hell out of every site in the results.

Not that I leave the comments/pingbacks open on my blogs anymore anyway. I don't want people hanging around yakking. They are supposed to go and buy what I'm selling, not talk!

did you buy the template? I'd say no.
So how could you have any sentimental feelings over allowing their link to remain on your BH blog?
My philosophy is "eliminate all exit links and milk my traffic for all it's worth".

    I remove them.

I guess I'll try removing them for a while and see what happens.

I can say with complete certanty that there is a 0% chance of you getting a dmca complaint issued against you. Take it off.

I always delete it. DMCA cannot be filed since WordPress is released under GPL, meaning you can do anything you want to it (as far as I know).

deleting it or leaving it no big deal one way or the other - just go with whatever makes you happy.

Now the other links in the footer of themes I would always delete, but the one for wordpress is meaningless either way

While they want you to keep a link to their site on yours, they won't do anything about it. Maybe if you get really popular they'll email you politely asking for it back but really they rank so high already that they really don't need it anymore.

They say that because they don't want to give free backlinks to wordpress.
