rel tag is used for?

    Am actually in a huge confusion about 'rel' tag.... Can any one please explain me about the tag and the usage, with the benefits????

    It is used mostly to tell search engine spider to follow or not to follow a link. Example:

    - use aff. Links without losing your website authority
    - reffer to an external source without losing link juice

    Rel sets a relational attribute to links. Most commonly used to add nofollow to links, but can be used for a number of other purposes. So for instance the Google authorship markup uses the rel=author.
