There are good registrars, there are bad registrars and then there are two that cannot be worse. Whether it's service, their price or absolutely ridiculous support

These two are Register.com and Network Solutions. What happened to me today however was beyond anything I have ever imagined. The only reason why I have to use registrars like these two is, because domain reselling companies like Namejet or Snapnames use them and whenever you win a domain via one of these two aforementioned companies, there's a good chance your domain will be on either Register.com or Network Solutions.

2 days ago I won a domain via Namejet like millions of times before. The next day I have received an email with "thank you for your order", where I was apparently charged for renewal of the domain for 2 years. Network Solutions, Enom and other similar registrars have renewal fees of around $50, so I got charged around $95.

I immediately sent a support ticket demanding explanation, because for the love of me, I have never renewed any domain. Support said, that the domain was renewed by previous owner, but at the time it was already in my account, so I received an email about it. When I asked who was charged, they did not know. How is this possible is beyond me, but that's nothing compared to what I saw this morning.

Yesterday I won another domain that landed on Network Solutions. I logged in with the intention to buy a privacy for it. During checkout I saw I have a new credit card on file. This credit card was not mine. It belonged to the client who previously owned the aforementioned domain. Somehow, their databases got screwed up and his credit card ended in my account alongside with all the details.

I could, and at the time I am writing this, still can, use his credit card to pay for whatever Network Solution services I want. You can see it here:

How can this happen to a company with over 2000 employees is unimaginable. It's not just ridiculous, it's absolutely scary. Support hasn't replied to ticket yet of course, it's been over 6 hours now. I have meanwhile notified the previous owner about this crap. I really wish he will take some legal steps.

Imagine this happening to you. Just scary.

Bottom line, use decent registrars whenever you can choose. Namebright, Namesilo, Namecheap, Dynadot, even Hover are pretty good. Avoid shit like Network Solutions, Register.com and even Enom. Not to mention Godaddy and 1and1.

Downside sometimes of having staff earning peanuts who have access to this type of data, someone comes along and waves big money at them.
I know a few years back a couple of sports books who got caught out this way.

It's scary that your credit card details can get mixed up like this.

Maybe the tin foil hat brigade are not so paranoid after all!

You're waiting 6 hours for support to get back to you?

That is nothing for Network Solutions... they may never get back to you.

They tend to relatively fast, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't after this.

Register.com support is even higher level of amateurism.

I remember when I requested an authorisation code for transfer of the domain. Received it via email, enter it and it didn't work. I hit support.

    - My auth code is not working.
    - Can you send it please?
    - Sent
    - Lol this is not an auth code, no idea how you got it, this is the right one.
    - Yeh... I totally made that old one up... *irony* Here is the email I got from you a few days back, see attachment.
    - Oh, you can't make the auth codes up!

    ...

They were the first company I bought a domain through and I was greener than freshly mown grass in the springtime.

My most recent experience with them was similar in that I bought a domain through a third party site and wanted to transfer it and it took 4 emails to get them to respond.

I think Network Solutions is actually thee worst registrars I have ever used and this confirms it. I only use them because like you said some domains use them during the drop, and the reason there are so many expired domains and auction domains with them is because back in the day it used to be MUCH harder to transfer from them until the FTC got involved.

This though is completely ridiculous, changing account holders should require a database flush of the old credit card data and have you reenter yours. But if you log into network solutions you quickly realize it has one of the ugliest and least user friendly GUI's out there so expectations are low of their tech skills.

One of their many lawsuits - this one was them offering refund in 30 days if you didnt like your service...surprise you would get stuck in calls, forwarded to operators until you wanted to kill yourself and never get your refund

So basically a bunch of scammers, nothing else. Namejet should think twice with whom they work. Enom is still fairly decent in comparison.

Hahahah welcome to hell Nargil, NameJet, LLC, is a joint venture between eNom, Inc., a subsidiary of Tucows, and Network Solutions, LLC, a subsidiary Web.com

I believe they have 20+ registrars working for them if I am not mistaken.

Still, why care? They get their money and if some shit hits the fan, it's fault of NS, not of Namejet. Ridiculous. :)

Oh and another thing about Network Solutions.

They are charging VAT tax to companies or business entities without the option to enter your VAT number to remove the tax. And yep, that's illegal.

Network Solutions leaks contact info even if you use privacy, + it's the worst company, not only worst registrar, but worst company overall. Read reviews if you need any more proof.

I've been working with them for a few months now, so no proofs needed really. :)
