Someone used it as an affiliate site in the same niche from 2011 - 2013. What a noob mistake. It has backlinks from what looks to me like spammy article sites but i havent been around long enough yet to have seen these before.

    13 from 5 referring domains.

    articledude.com
    sweasy26.com
    thearticlebeach2.com

and then some spammy comment backlinks

Is it worth even trying or should I start over?

If it it doesn't have a penalty then I would go for it, if you don't fancy spending the extra cash to get a new one.

I would have checked that stuff out prior to buying it, but yeah I wouldn't put any time into it. Might not get indexed.

I used to make this same mistake years ago. Now, I always check if the domain was used before, and check the backlink profiles if it is spammy or not.

If you are not comfortable with it, you can skip and buy a brand new domain, or go for it and see what happens in 2 months time.

If its a good name you really want to use and it dosen't index after a week or so, just add it to webmaster tool and let google know your the new owner and they will get rid off any penalty. Ive done it myself in the past.

What do you mean by let google know youre the new owner? Any option for that to select or do you simply just upload it to webmaster tools?

Do you disavow all the old links?

Already got a new domain btw. But may keep this one as a sister site and see if i can end up dominating this super low competition niche.

No you need to send them a message from your webmaster tool account. There should be some option where you can contact them, not sure where though since it was a long time ago i did it. It will be treated as a fresh domain after that. No need to disavow any links.

Safer option is to use a domain you are 100% sure is clean and not waste time and money on a domain that might have a penalty. (Algo penalty do not show in WMT and previous manual penatly but wa successful in reconsideration but still shit too).

Normal people who don't rank websites for a living is not going to check domains if they have a penalty or been used in the past. So if you tell google you are the new owner they will lift any penalty the domain might have. It will be counted as a new domain in their eyes.

The domain I bought with a penalty was a former hacker site but now it has 100's of top 3 ranking keywords in google.
